SBLive Sports National High School Wrestling Rankings (2/9/2023)

As state postseason events are taking shape, fewer national upsets are expected

National High School Wrestling Rankings

As the postseason gets underway in most states now dramatic shifts in the rankings will be a rare occurrence since the level of competition for nationally ranked guys is weaker on the local level. That is not an across-the-board statement, though, as some states have many ranked wrestlers.

For example, a mild upset happened at the Iowa Dual Meet State Tournament where No. 17 Jake Knight of Bettendorf edged Fort Dodge’s No. 16 Dru Ayala, 3-1. But to further the previous point, that was the only national upset over all three divisions.

Individual Region Tournaments took place in Illinois and Indiana last weekend, and yielded zero national upsets.

In Illinois, Homewood Flossmoor’s Vincent Robinson moved back to 132 for the postseason series. Robinson competed at 132 most of the year, but dropped to 126 for the Doc Buchanan Tournament in California in Mid-January.

Orlando Cruz (Crown Point, IN) competed at 190 for the season opening Ironman Tournament. Indiana is one of the states still using the “old” weight classes, and Cruz appeared at 182 in his regional.

Cody Merrill (Gilroy, CA) missed a large chunk of the season due to injury, when he returned, he did so at heavyweight. At the Blossom Valley League Tournament, Merrill was down at 220, winning that title easily with a 1:05 fall over Izak Nguygen (Overfelt).

New Jersey’s Blair Academy dropped most of their lineup down for January’s Escape the Rock Tournament in Pennsylvania. It appears that was a one-time move. SBLive Sports had a conversation with Blair’s coach Ross Gitomer and was informed that his guys would be returning to their original weights for their National Prep run.
