SBLive Sports National High School Wrestling Rankings (Pre Summer update)

Olympic style wrestling is now at the forefront

wrestling rankings

This will be our first update since the Olympic Styles have stepped to the forefront. While they are what’s happening now, so to speak, the basis of these rankings and what the kids do the majority of the time – is Folkstyle.

We will use the Freestyle and Greco Roman results, but at times these need to be taken with a grain of salt. After a month of watching these matches unfold, it’s obvious some of these results can be fluky. A takedown to a leg lock can result in a tech-fall very quickly. And these are back points that would not be counted in Folkstyle.

It’s the strange circumstances of this country’s approach to wrestling. Most countries focus on the Olympic Styles only. But in the United States, two-thirds of a wrestler’s time is spent competing in Folkstyle.

So, we are going to use these results, but they will not be weighed as heavily as the Folkstyle results. There were wrestlers that placed in the 17U World Team Trials that did not win their state tournament, and in a few cases did not even place in the states.

One such example involves two California wrestlers, Poway’s Edwin Sierra and Walnut’s Ronnie Ramirez. Ramirez was the CA state champ at 113 and beat Sierra at the Temecula Battle for the Belt. Sierra was fifth at the state tournament, but at the WTT he placed seventh in both disciplines, beating Ramirez in the Freestyle competition.

Our reaction to this is to give Sierra a bump in the rankings but not overreact when a larger portion of the results suggest Ramirez is the better wrestler. Since the WTT, Ramirez competed in the CA Freestyle States at 126, so they are in different weights in this update, but had Ramirez stayed at 120, he would have been ahead of Sierra.

There are lots of examples of things like this playing out with many of the other “breakthrough” wrestlers. Before we add anyone into our rankings, we do a deep dive on them and track down as many results from the season as we can. There needs to be a clear picture for every athlete to give them an accurate ranking. Overreacting to a recent result does not do anyone any justice.

There are far too many relevant results since our last edition of the rankings to list them all. I am open to discussing anything relevant to the rankings through email, which can be found after the introduction. These cover the action through the weekend of May 15th. In addition to the US Open results, they also include the national regional Fargo qualifiers that have taken place (Northeast, Northern Plains, and West). This weekend the Central Regional takes place in Indiana.

We are trimming back our Honorable Mention section. Near the end of the high school season and with the NHSCA Nationals, many new wrestlers, who were ranking worthy emerged, so we expanded at each weight as needed. Since this is now another part of the season, we cut it back at each weight with nine as the max HM entries (from here, we’ll add as new guys emerge).

Two more notes, current seniors will stay in the rankings through Fargo, as that is the last event, they are eligible for. They are still competing, so they should remain in the rankings. We are not adding the current crop of eighth graders making some noise nationally into the rankings until we do our first set of rankings post-Fargo. At that point, it’ll be out with the seniors and in with the ninth graders. Lastly, we dropped the 165lb & 175lb weights and went with the weight classes USA Wrestling is using for their summer series.
