SBLive Sports National High School Wrestling Rankings (Summer Update)

Fargo Nationals Preview as wrestlers from the Class of 2023 compete in their final high school event
SBLive Sports National High School Wrestling Rankings (Summer Update)
SBLive Sports National High School Wrestling Rankings (Summer Update) /

As we stated in our previous update, outgoing seniors will still appear in the SBLive Sports National High School rankings until the Fargo Nationals, which take place this week, concludes. This is the last high school event in which wrestlers from the Class of 2023. Following Fargo, we will publish our official final 2022-23 national wrestling rankings.

After that, our next rankings will remove the seniors and add in the incoming freshmen that have made noise this summer.

Illinois just won National Duals titles with a roster comprised largely of seniors. These rankings included results from the NHSCA Spring Duals, 16U National Duals, Junior National Duals, and the AAU Scholastic Duals at the end of June. The AAU and NHSCA Duals were Folkstyle. The National Duals were Freestyle and Greco-Roman.

We will point out some of the changes and shifts, but there were quite a few. If you have questions about the logic behind any of the rankings, feel free to reach out to me at billybwrestling@yahoo.com.

Last year’s 100lb Junior Freestyle National Champ, Tyler Garvin (Maryland), wrestled the high school season at 113 but has dropped to 106 for Fargo. Interestingly, he is slated to appear at 113 lbs for the Greco-Roman portion of the event. Garvin takes over the top spot at 106.

Dom Munaretto has moved to 113 where he took some recent lumps. In the 16U Freestyle Duals, Munaretto fell to Iowa’s Carter Pearson. Munaretto previously beat Pearson in the Cheesehead Finals in January. In addition to the Pearson loss, Munaretto was tripped up by Dedrick Navarro (Idaho) at the NHSCA Duals. Navarro has some in-season losses keeping him from ascending too high in the pecking order, but Navarro also beat Oklahoma’s Chris Kiser at NHSCAs.

Also at the NHSCA Duals, Bryson Valdez (New Mexico) got on our radar with a win over Kiser.

Adrian Meza (Arizona) was our previous Top Dog at 126, but since beating Luke Lilledahl (Pennsylvania) at Journeyman to take the spot, he has lost to Jax Forrest (PA) at the PNL-PA Tournament and Cal Nasdeo (PA) at the U20 World Team Trials.

Forrest moves into the No.1 spot based on a common opponent win involving Lilledahl. At the U20 WTT, Lilledahl beat Troy Spratley twice in their best-of-three final (9-4 and 4-2), while Forrest was defeated by Spratley, 12-7.

Oklahoma’s Jace Roller has been climbing up the 138lb rankings recently. At NHSCAs, Roller decked New Jersey’s Tyler Vazquez in 28 seconds then defeated Pennsylvania’s Maddox Shaw, 3-2. Roller saved his biggest win for the Junior National Freestyle Duals when he flattened Ohio’s Omar Ayoub in 3:47.

Michigan’s Dylan Gilcher was at 150 during the high school season but he came down to 65 kg (roughly 143 lbs) for the U20 Freestyle WTT. Iowa’s Ryder Block was up at 65 kilos from 138 lbs. Block lost to Jordan Williams, whom Gilcher beat.

At 160 lbs, New Jersey’s William Henckel toppled the previous No. 1 ranked guy, Joe Sealey (PA), at the U20 WTT, 9-7, en route to a runner-up finish. Sealey has a loss to Ohio’s Joey Blaze, 4-3, at Super 32 and fell to another Ohioan, Ethan Birden, 5-3, at Ironman.

Harvey Ludington (New Jersey) moved up the ladder at 182 with a 5-3 overtime win versus Minnesota’s Cole Han-Lindemyer at the NHSCA Duals.

There is a new No. 1 heavyweight, and he hails from Idaho. Aden Attao won the U20 WTT title with a 12-2 tech fall of Koy Hopke (WI). Attao also defeated Carter Neves (OH/NJ) by a technical fall, 13-2, at the WTT. Attao won last year’s Junior Freestyle Fargo title with a 9-6 win over Illinoi’s Dillan Johnson.

Coming in at No. 4 in the latest 285 lb rankings is a wrestler who missed most of this season due to injury, California’s Cody Merrill. Merrill was the 195 lb Junior freestyle champion at Fargo last summer.

The action at Fargo gets underway on Saturday with the 16U and Junior Girls Freestyle competition. Monday through Wednesday is Boys 16U and Junior Freestyle. Thursday is a down day, then the Boys 16U and Junior Greco-Roman finish it off on Friday and Saturday.
