L.A. Coliseum to host 2023 CIF-Southern Section Division 1 championship football game

For the first time in 26 years the historic venue will host a Southern Section title event

From the Rose Bowl to the L.A. Coliseum. Those are two pretty iconic venues.

That's the transition of sites from the 2022 to 2023 for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship football game.

The Southern Section announced that agreement Tuesday morning for the Nov. 24 game that will kick off at 7 p.m.

Last season, about 16,000 were in attendance at the Rose Bowl to watch St. John Bosco upend Mater Dei 24-22 in the D1 title game. It was the same year the Rose Bowl celebrated its 100th anniversary.

This is the 100th season for the Coliseum, home of USC football and the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, and the same two teams are expected to meet there again in six weeks.

St. John Bosco upset Mater Dei, then the No. 1 team in the country on Friday, 28-0.

This will mark the first time in 26 years that the Coliseum has hosted a championship football game.

The Coliseum hosted the 2022 East LA Classic between Roosevelt and Garfield with the Black Eyed Peas performing at halftime. That game drew 45,000 fans (see video above).

The regular-season finale between King/Drew versus Dorsey on Oct. 27 is also scheduled at the Coliseum.
