La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad, San Ysidro grab wins at The Holiday Classic Tip Off Night
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Here are three takeaways from Thursday night's triple-header at Tip Off Night of the The Holiday Classic presented by SBLive Sports.
BIG SECOND HALF FUELS LA COSTA CANYON
La Costa Canyon, who jumped into SBLive's San Diego Section top 10 this week at No. 7, erased a six-point halftime deficit to take down Francis Parker and win their fourth consecutive game. The Mavericks scored only seven points in the second quarter before erupting for 23 points in each the third and fourth quarters.
Junior point guard Ty Hendler led the Mavericks with 21 points while senior forward Brayden Hendricks had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Francis Parker senior guard Camden McCormick led all scorers with 26 points while battling foul trouble throughout the second half.
FRESHMAN JAKE HALL STEALS THE SHOW
Carlsbad and Mater Dei Catholic played a relatively even first three quarters with the Lancers taking a seven-point lead into the final quarter. Carlsbad dominated the fourth quarter 25-9, including a 10-0 run that put the game out of reach.
Freshman guard Jake Hall led the Lancers with 26 points, including ten during the final quarter.
“We were driving and kicking well and getting open shots," Hall said of Carlsbad's offense. "Getting through the defense, getting two feet in the key and kicking out.”
The Lancers, who evened their record at 6-6 with the win, have now played four of the top eight teams in the SBLive San Diego Section top 10.
SAN YSIDRO AND TORREY PINES COMES DOWN TO THE WIRE
The final game of the night between Torrey Pines and San Ysidro featured two top-five San Diego Section teams and lived up to the hype.
Torrey Pines led by four points at halftime before San Ysidro's 23-point third quarter gave them a four-point lead heading into the final quarter. The Falcons fought back and grabbed a three-point lead after Otto Landrum's layup with less than two minutes to play before the Cougars finished the game on an 8-0 run to snatch a 67-62 win.
San Ysidro senior guards Sebastian Medina and Miguel Figueroa combined to score 50 of the Cougar's 67 points.
Torrey Pines was led by sophomore Zach Jackson's 23 points, 17 of which came during the first half.
