La Costa Canyon graduate Kevin O'Connell named Minnesota Vikings head coach
The Minnesota Vikings announced the hiring of Kevin O'Connell as the tenth head coach in franchise history on Wednesday afternoon.
The 2003 graduate of La Costa Canyon High School has coached in the NFL since 2015, most recently serving as the Offensive Coordinator for the Super Bowl Champion Los Angeles Rams.
O'Connell was a standout football and basketball player at La Costa Canyon before heading to San Diego State, where he became a four-year starter at quarterback for the Aztecs. Following his senior season, O'Connell was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft and served as Tom Brady's backup for the 2008 season. O'Connell went on to play for the Lions, Jets, Dolphins, and Chargers before retiring in 2012. He then transitioned to the announcer's booth, serving as a color commentator for CBS Sports before beginning his coaching career in 2015.
