San Diego Section boys basketball playoff roundup: San Ysidro and La Costa Canyon grab road wins in Open Division
The boys basketball playoffs in the San Diego Section have reached the halfway mark and all six divisions were in action on Saturday night. Here's a breakdown of each bracket with the semifinal rounds upcoming on Tuesday and Wednesday.
OPEN DIVISION
St. Augustine 84, Mission Bay 43
The Saints wasted no time, dominating Mission Bay by 41 points for their third victory over the Buccaneers this season. They'll host La Costa Canyon on Wednesday.
La Costa Canyon 63, Mission Hills 42
The Mavericks got redemption against the Grizzlies after twice losing to them in the regular season. Junior Christian Brown led the way with 22 points and was joined by Brayden Hendricks and Ty Hendler who both scored in double digits.
Torrey Pines 65, Cathedral Catholic 61
Torrey Pines Junior guard JJ Bartelloni was on fire from deep, connecting on seven three-pointers to help the Falcons get by the Dons and advance to the CIF Semifinals for the 16th consecutive season.
San Ysidro 66, San Marcos 52
San Ysidro took advantage of a San Marcos team that was without start guard Devon Arlington following last week's Achilles injury. The Cougars led throughout with senior forward Martin Flores finishing with 21 points. They'll travel to Torrey Pines in the next round with a trip to the Open Division Championship game on the line.
DIVISION 1
Francis Parker 65, El Camino 56
The Lancers regained control after losing the first quarter and steadily pulled away from El Camino. Senior Camden McCormick finished with 29 points and 14 rebounds for the Lancers.
La Jolla Country Day 48, Del Norte 45
The Torreys and Nighthawks were separated by only one point after each of the first three quarters. Junior Garrett Bass-Sulpizio hit two big free throws in the closing seconds to give the Torreys a three-point lead.
Carlsbad 78, Mater Dei Catholic 65
The lone game on Friday night, Carlsbad led by four points after one quarter before extending their lead to double digits after each of the final three quarters. Freshman Jake Hall led the way with 25 points.
San Diego 63, Santa Fe Christian 47
The Cavers headed north and emerged with a dominant win over the Coastal League's regular season champions. San Diego will head back north on Tuesday when they take on Carlsbad.
DIVISION 2
San Dieguito Academy 75, Ramona 66
The top-seeded Mustangs kept rolling despite 29 points from Ramona sophomore Chase Newman.
Grossmont 67, Mission Vista 29
After a narrow first round win over Maranatha Christian, Grossmont took control against Mission Vista and rolled to a 67-29 victory. The Foothillers will now have to travel to top-seeded San Dieguito Academy.
Madison 68, Steele Canyon 41
Madison had three players in double digits led by Jake Jackson's 19 points. They led by 35 points at halftime and cruised through the second half.
Scripps Ranch 55, High Tech High 53
Scripps narrowly got by the Storm and will now get their third chance to beat league foe Madison when they travel to play the Warhawks on Tuesday.
DIVISION 3
Montgomery 65, Mira Mesa 57
The Aztecs and Marauders were tied at halftime and after three quarters before Montgomery did just enough to gain separation in the final quarter.
Mt. Carmel 78, Patrick Henry 77
Mt. Carmel senior Jaden Matusalem went off for 39 points to lead the Sundevils to a one-point victory. They're rewarded with a trip to play top-seeded Montgomery.
Otay Ranch 59, Calexico 49
Nico Cervantes led the Mustangs with 17 points and was one of three players to score in double digits.
Hoover 57, University City 47
Hoover had to come from behind, outscoring the Centurions by 16 points in the final quarter to win by ten. They'll travel to Otay Ranch in the semifinals.
DIVISION 4
Monte Vista 60, Fallbrook 43
Monte Vista stayed hot and took control against Fallbrook. They'll get Escondido Charter in the semifinals.
Escondido Charter 67, Kearny 52
The White Tigers led by 14 at halftime before the Komets narrowed the lead down to four points after three quarters. Escondido Charter responded with a run of their own in the final quarter to close out Kearny.
Victory Christian 73, Hilltop 48
Victory Christian cruised to their second straight playoff win. They'll host Crawford on Wednesday with a trip to the CIF Championship game on the line.
Crawford 47, Pacific Ridge 44 (OT)
After going cold in the second and third quarters, Pacific Ridge battles back to force overtime and came up just short against the visiting Colts.
DIVISION 5
St. Joseph Academy 59, Horizon Prep 20
El Cajon Valley 75, Castle Park 49
Sophomore Jahir Bosley scored 26 points for the Braves in their rout of Castle Park.
Southern California Yeshiva 45, Rock Academy 33
Valley Center 83, San Diego Jewish Academy 57
