Ohio high school football playoffs Division V roundup: Clearview, Coldwater, Purcell Marian among winners in second round (11/03/2023)

The second round of the OHSAA football playoffs kicked off on Friday; here are the results in Division V

The Ohio High School Athletic Association playoffs continued Friday night with 224 teams vying for a state championship across seven divisions, with 32 teams in each divisions broken into eight teams per region.

In Division V, the top four seeds - Perry, Liberty Center, Ironton and Valley View all advanced to the next round with home wins.

Second round games of note: 

Clearview 19, Norwayne 16

Trailing 16-0 at halftime, sixth-seeded Clearview scored 19 unanswered points in the second half to upset third-seeded Norwayne in Region 17.

The Clippers got the ball after a turnover on downs with 3:34 left in the game and running back Ethan Lorenzana, who was playing quarterback for an ill Cy Christensen,  threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Lane for the lead. 

Clearview will play defending state champion South Range in the regional semifinals.

Coldwater 28, Archbold 14

Coldwater, the No. 6 seed in Region 18, scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to take the lead and advance to the regional semifinals.

With the teams tied 14-14 at halftime, Coldwater's  Jack Ebbing scored from two yards out with 8:36 left in the third quarter to give the Cavaliers a 21-14 lead.

And then quarterback Baylen Blockberger and wide receiver A.J. Harlamert connected for a 42-yard touchdown to make it 28-14. It was the third touchdown of the game for Harlamert.

Purcell Marian 30, Zane Trace 28 

The Cavaliers needed a last-second field goal to advance to the regional semifinals.

Trailing 28-27 in the closing seconds, Tyler Rude nailed a 289-yard field goal right down the middle to give Purcell Marian, the No. 5 seed in Region 20, the win.

Zane Trace, the No. 4 seed in the region, had taken the 28-27 lead with a touchdown and 2-point conversion midway through the fourth quarter.
