Classic in the Country 2024 Day 3: Fairland, Olentangy, Portsmouth among winners (01/15/2024)
BERLIN, Ohio - The 2023 Classic in the Country began on Saturday with eight games at the Reese Center at Berlin Hiland High School and continued with seven more games on Sunday before the three-day event wrapped up with eight more games on Monday. Below is a quick recap of each of Monday's games.
Fairland 58, Gilmour Academy 45
Fairland, ranked No. 9 in the latest SBLive Ohio girls basketball Power 25, led from the opening possession and never trailed, improving its record to 13-1.
A 19-8 first quarter set the tone for the Dragons, who then led by 16 at the half.
Gilmour Academy, ranked No. 19, went on an 8-0 made a run in the third quarter to get the lead down to nine, but Fairland answered with an 8-2 run of its own.
Kylee Bruce led the Dragons with 14 points and Bailey Russell added 12. Bree Allen notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Elaina Kline-Ruminski and Helen Holley each had 14 points to pace Gilmour. Holly also added 11 rebounds.
Olentangy 65, Unioto 63
Olentangy, the fifth-ranked team in the SBLive girls basketball Power 25, used a 17-14 advantage over the final eight minutes to come back and defeat Unioto to improve to 14-0.
The Braves used a huge discrepancy in second chance points, as they scored 23 compared to just two for Unioto. In fact, Olentangy had as many offensive rebounds (31) than Unioto had total rebounds.
Freshman Sydney Mobley led the Braves with 28 points and 18 rebounds, none offensive and nine defensive. Chayla Rankin had 11 points and seven rebounds for Olentangy.
Mya Hamilton led Uniot with 25 points and Milee Smith had 22.
Mason 49, Belleville 28(Michigan)
Mason, the No. 14 team in the SBLive Ohio girls basketball Power 25, jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one quarter and cruised to victory over previously unbeaten Belleville.
The Comets outrebounded the Tigers 47-28, which led to a 16-0 advantage in second chance points.
Belleville shot just 20% from the field for the game.
Madison Parrish led the Comets with 14 points and eight rebounds and Riley Yost added 11 and seven.
Freshman Sydney Savoury led Belleville with 15 points and seven boards.
Anthony Wayne 63, Magnificat 49
An 18-9 fourth quarter propelled the Generals, ranked No. 20 in the latest SBLive Ohio girls basketball Power 25, to a win after trailing following each of the first three quarters.
Anthony Wayne trailed by four after the first, by two at the half and by five after three quarters before finally settling in.
Elise Bender led all scorers in the game with 29 points, while Brooke Bender scored 14 and Mallory Pike added 12.
Reese Roggenburk paced the Blue Streaks with 14 and Sofia Wilson added 12 points and six assists.
Portsmouth 46, Laurel 38
Portsmouth rebounded from a loss to Mason on Sunday with a win over Laurel on Monday.
Sienna Allen and Daysha Reid combined for 40 of the 46 points, as Allen has 21 and Reid finished with 19.
With Laurel trailing 39-32 and just under five minutes remaining, sophomore standout Saniyah Hall fouled out while trying to grab an offensive rebound. She finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Brush 50, Kettering Fairmont 36
A 13-2 run in the third quarter after trailing by four helped lead the Arcs to a win and a 16-2 record.
Brush, No. 11 in the latest SBLive Ohio girls basketball Power 25, was tied at 20-20 at the half with the Firebirds. After Fairmont scored the first four points of the second half, the Arcs finished the game on a 30-12 stretch and held the Firebirds to just 21.7% shooting in the second half.
Brush had four players score at least nine points, led by Chaniyra McDowell-Isaacs and Jakalyn Brown with 13 each, Brooklyn Vickers with 10 and Tatiana Mason with nine. mason also led the Arcs with 11 rebounds.
Kaylah Thornton led the Firebirds with 12 points and six rebounds.
West Holmes 53, Strasburg 32
West Holmes won every quarter en route to a win Monday evening.
After shooting just 26.7% from the floor in the first half, the Knights made 46.2% of their shots int he second half while holding Strasburg to just 21.1% shooting in the second half and 30.8% for the game.
Aveona Yoder led all scorers with 19 points for West Holmes, while Briar Cline had 14 and Keegan Uhl added 12.
Sophia Secrest and Riley Thomas each had 12 to lead Strasburg, and Thomas also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Olmsted Falls 46, Hiland 39
An 18-4 run in the second quarter got the Olmsted Falls offense going and allowed the Bulldogs to pull away from Hiland in the final game of the 2024 Classic in the Country.
The run included five 3-pointers, three of which came from Danielle Cameron, who led the Bulldogs with 22 points and she hit five total 3-pointers.
But Hiland went on a 10-1 run in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to five before the Bulldogs hit five free throws down the stretch.
Ashley Mullet led the Hawks with 18 points.
