OHSAA hockey state championship live updates: St. Ignatius defeats University School

COLUMBUS, Ohio - St. Ignatius and University School did battle on the ice at Nationwide Arena Sunday afternoon for the OHSAA hockey state title, a championship claimed by St. Ignatius with a 4-1 victory.

St. Ignatius won its eighth OHSAA hockey state championship and its first since 2019, while University School lost in the state championship game for the second straight season..

In the state semifinals, St. Ignatius defeated Toledo St. Francis de Sales 6-4 and University School defeated St. Charles 6-0.

First period updates

10:00 remaining: After five minutes, teams are settling in. St. Ignatius had a pair of shots on goal early, but University School goaltender Noah Caballero was up to the task.

St. Ignatius goalie Dominic Filizetti made a save on a wrist shot with 10:52 left.

8:32 remaining:  Filizetti made three saves in a row to keep this one tied 0-0.

7:36 remaining: University School had two shots in the crease but  Filizetti stopped both.

3:56 remaining: This time it was Caballero with multiple saves on shots at point blank range to keep it scoreless. We also have the first penalty of the game on University School for cross checking.

3:21 remaining: Nolan Ignacio with a power play goal for St. Ignatius as he weaved through the defense and beat Cabarello to make it 1-0.  

End of period: St. Ignatius leads 1-0.

Second period updates 

11:53 remaining:  Ignacio almost notched his second goal of the game but hit the iron.

8:30 remaining: An offensive flurry for University School goes unrewarded as St. Ignatius blocked a shot and two shots blew just wide of the net. 

5:55 remaining: Play was stopped with University School having numbers because a St. Ignatius player was down behind the net being defended by University School.

5:05 remaining: University School goes on a power play after St. Ignatius is called for roughing.

4:09 remaining: Braden Esenwine steals the puck for St. Ignatius and goes in all alone against Caballero for a short-handed goal to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. 

3:05 remaining: St. Ignatius has killed off the penalty.

End of period: St. Ignatius leads 2-0.

Third period updates:

14:42 remaining: Esenwine scores again for St. Ignatius to make it 3-0. The ogal was assisted by Sam Elwell and Dario Piazza.

The goal was set up by a kick save by Filizetti on a shot by University School in the opening seconds of the period.

7:30 remaining: Luke Palmer goes top shelf for University School's first goal of the game, cutting the St. Ignatius lead to 3-1. The assist goes to Anthony Messina.

3:49 remaining: Filizetti keeps it a 3-1 game with a 1-on-1 save right in front of the net. And now University School takes a timeout and has pulled the goalie.

1:34 remaining: Filizetti with a glove save on a rocket over his left shoulder.

4.1 seconds remaining: Justin Frederick hits the open net to make it 4-1 St. Ignatius.
