It's the start of a new year, and several athletes across the state were more than determined to make an early impression.

Davon Scott, Oklahoma City Douglass boys basketball
Scott led the Trojans with 15 points, but it was his free throw with seven-tenths of a second remaining that was his most important, lifting Douglass to a 52-51 win against crosstown rival Millwood in a highly anticipated game played Saturday night.
Marcayla Johnson, Tulsa Booker T. Washington girls basketball
Johnson, a Baylor commit, nearly had a quadruple-double in the Lady Hornets' 67-50 win last week against Collinsville. She had 13 points and 12 rebounds along with nine steals and seven assists. Johnson also had a double-double of 19 points and 12 boards in a district win against Pryor.
Justice Johnson, Hobart boys basketball
Johnson scored 25 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and distributed seven assists in his team's 70-35 win against Navajo on Friday.
Garrett Loper, Westmoore boys basketball
Loper had a 21-point performance, and the Jaguars needed every one of those as they edged Putnam City West, 57-56, on Jan. 12.
Isaiah Amous, Norman boys basketball
Amous turned in a career night on Jan. 12, scoring 24 points along with seven rebounds, two steals and three assists in the Tigers' 94-51 win against Lawton Eisenhower.
Claire Hooker, Locust Grove girls basketball
Hooker led her team with 17 points as the Lady Pirates edged Wagoner, 48-44.
Kobe Freeman, Purcell boys basketball
Freeman scored 32 points while grabbing eight rebounds along with making six assists and three steals in the Dragons' 71-60 win against Lexington on Jan. 12.
Avery Hjelmstad, Edmond Memorial girls basketball
Hjelmstad had a big week for the surging Lady Bulldogs. She scored 19 points and hit five 3-pointers in a 66-32 win against Enid; then had 15 points - including five foul shots in the final quarter - as Memorial outlasted Tulsa Union, 58-51.
Zac Brown, Collinsville boys basketball
In a pair of Cardinal wins last week, Brown turned in double-doubles. He had 20 points and 11 rebounds against Claremore along with 22 points and 10 boards against Tulsa East Central.
Macy Marraccini, Broken Arrow girls basketball
Marraccini, the Lady Tigers' point guard, scored 20 points as Broken Arrow picked up a 57-44 win against Jenks on Jan. 12.
Kneah Smith, Jones girls basketball
Smith scored 23 points in a 73-28 win against Casady. In that win, she converted 62.5 percent of her field-goal attempts.
Cherish Haywood, Mustang girls basketball
Haywood turned in 12 points and grabbed seven boards in a 61-39 win against Moore; then recorded a double-double of 15 points and 11 boards along with six assists in a 76-62 win against Norman North.
Carter Benton, Holland Hall boys basketball
Benton scored 23 points in two wins last week by the Dutch, a 72-48 win against Cascia Hall on Jan. 10 and a 71-48 win against McAlester two nights later.
Emilee Hedger, Plainview girls basketball
Hedger scored 23 points in her team's 80-31 win against Dickson on Jan. 12.
Mark Jackson, Midwest City boys basketball
Jackson turned in a 27-point performance as the Bombers got past Lawton MacArthur, 77-57, on Jan. 13.
Luke Gray, Oklahoma Christian School boys basketball
Gray registered a double-double of 22 points and 19 rebounds as the Saints knocked off previously undefeated North Rock Creek, 70-36, on Jan. 9.
Cash Donnell, Piedmont boys wrestling
An Oklahoma signee, Donnell won the 120-pound weight class at the Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference tournament by getting a 5-0 decision against Edmond North's Devon Miller in a rematch of last season's 6A 120 title match, also won by Donnell.
Brayden Kochenower, Kingfisher boys wrestling
Kochenower won the 138-pound class at the Western Conference Tournament, which was held in Kingfisher. He picked up the title with a 4-2 decision in the finals.
Jude Randall, Edmond North boys wrestling
Randall, who is headed to wrestle at Oklahoma, took first place in the 175-pound class at the Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference tournament. His efforts also helped the Huskies claim the team title.
Hannah Lopez, Moore girls wrestling
Lopez, who won state in the 105-pound class as a freshman last season, took home first-place honors in the 115 class at the Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference tournament. She also helped the Lady Lions claim first in the team division.
