In a normal year, December would be a time to hand out all-state awards for fall high school sports in Oregon.

Of course, nothing about 2020 has been normal.

We hope circumstances will allow for high school sports to take place later in the school year. While we wait, we thought it would be fun to name all-state teams this December anyway.

Here are one longtime writer’s picks for an all-returning, all-classifications, all-state team in Oregon high school volleyball. This all-state team doesn’t take solely into account where a player slots into the recruiting rankings; it combines 2019 performance with 2020-21 projection to determine who might be the best of the best in the state of Oregon next spring. It also doesn’t divide between Class 6A and Class 1A — as you’ll see — but puts everyone into one boat.

We invite comments as to which players would make your all-Oregon team!

FIRST TEAM

Hitters

Emily Bourne, Sr., Santiam Christian

After winning Class 3A player of the year honors as a sophomore, the Oregon State commit came back to earn first-team all-state honors and help the Eagles win a second consecutive state championship.

Alexis Hobie, Sr., North Eugene

She improved from a second-team all-Midwestern selection to the league’s player of the year and a first-team Class 5A all-state honoree in leading the Highlanders back to the state tournament.

Clarissa Klein, Sr., Wilsonville

A second-team Class 5A all-state selection who helped the Wildcats reach the state championship match, the Saint Mary’s College signee led the team in kills (278) and aces (66) to go with 34 blocks and 154 digs while hitting at a .333 clip.

Tess Masingale, Jr., Jesuit

She emerged as a force in the middle for the repeat Class 6A state champions, earning second-team all-state honors while recording 188 kills with a team-best .363 hitting percentage to go with 30 blocks.

Daley McClellen, Sr., Canby

One of the the Northwest’s top outside hitters in the Class of 2021, the first-team all-state selection and Three Rivers player of the year has committed to the University of Oregon. She led the Cougars to a program-best third-place finish at the Class 6A state tournament.

Peyton Griffin, Sr., Jesuit

The first-team Class 6A all-state selection does a little of everything for the two-time defending state champions, finishing with 157 kills, 273 assists and 130 digs while sharing setting duties with second-team all-state pick Alison Buchholz.
