Jackson Doman made Canby’s return to the Reser’s Tournament of Champions at Hillsboro’s Liberty High School a happy one Saturday night, becoming the first Cougar to win a TOC title since 2014 with a 5-1 decision against Dallas’s Cole Langford in the 215-pound final.

The Cougars were a perennial invitee in the early years of the 22-year-old event, but they hadn’t appeared at the TOC for eight seasons before being invited back this year.

They acquitted themselves well, placing ninth among the 25 teams in the field and having five wrestlers make the podium, led by Doman, who placed sixth at the 5A state meet last year at 182 pounds and was determined to move up two weight classes this season.

“I just know I’ve put in the work in the room, put in the extra time and effort to gain weight and muscle to wrestle 215,” he said. “I came in here expecting to take home the eagle. Even though I was seeded third, I knew that I could do it. I went out there, wrestled my best and got the W.”

As the No. 3 seed, Doman defeated two potential rivals at next month’s 5A state meet en route to the title — Bend’s Logan Hartman in the quarterfinals and Langford, the No. 1 seed last weekend who placed fourth at 182 at state last year.

Doman’s TOC victory, his fifth tournament title this season but definitely the most significant of the bunch, improved his season record to 33-0 and should secure him the No. 1 seed at Portland’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum in four weeks.

He expects to see Langford seeded on the other side of the bracket, with a rematch looming on the final night.

“That should be a good rematch,” Doman said. “Hopefully, I’ll wrestle like I did today and take the ’ship.”
