Anthony Maddox, fast-rising Mississippi quarterback, commits to Texas A&M over Alabama, Penn State
The Texas A&M Aggies have had some trouble landing quarterbacks in the classes of 2022 and 2023, but will face no such issue in 2024.
On Monday, Oak Grove (Mississippi) three-star quarterback Anthony Maddox announce his commitment to the Aggies over fellow finalists Alabama and Penn State.
The mobile 6-foot-2, 175-pound signal-caller's interest spiked when Texas A&M hired Bobby Petrino as its offensive coordinator in early January, although he had been recruited by the Aggies for several months.
"I really love coach Bobby Petrino," Maddox said. "He really made it known early on that I am their guy for the 2024 class. He's a great guy. Him and coach Jimbo Fisher combined together just makes for a dynamic, explosive offense. I really feel like they fit my game, and coach Petrino really compared me to Lamar Jackson. He said I have a lot of similar tendencies to him."
As a junior, Maddox accumulated 2,198 yards with 20 touchdowns passing with an additional 347 yards and a score on the ground.
During that season, Maddox also attended a Texas A&M game in November and came away impressed by the culture in College Station.
"The atmosphere stood out," he said. "Coach Petrino wasn't there yet, but Coach Fisher is one of the best offensive-minded coaches in the game. Knowing him for so long and how he is - I grew up watching him at Florida State - that was big in my recruitment."
While Maddox felt comfortable with Texas A&M, he said another factor in an early commitment was the opportunity to become a class leader and peer recruiter this cycle.
"That was a main vocal point - to try to get some guys to follow me over there," he said. "I have some guys at my school, and my brother as well."
Andrew Maddox, Anthony's younger brother, is a class of 2025 defensive lineman who has already generated offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and many others.
Overall, Texas A&M's 2024 class consists of four early pledges, as Maddox joins Pine Tree (Texas) four-star defensive lineman Dealyn Evans, Milton (Georgia) four-star wide receiver Debron Gatling and Tompkins (Texas) four-star offensive tackle Ashton Funk.
