Asa Newell sets Wednesday commitment; Nation's No. 1 power forward considering 4
Montverde Academy (Florida) five-star power forward Asa Newell is ready to announce his college commitment.
The 6-foot-9, 205-pound playmaker, rated the nation's No. 8 overall prospect and No. 1 power forward in the class of 2024, will announce his decision Wednesday at noon PT/3 p.m. ET.
Newell is down to a final four of Alabama, Georgia, Gonzaga and Texas.
So, where is Newell headed?
That's a complicated question, and it may be a close race to the end.
Georgia is widely considered the leader on 247Sports and On3 (91.5 percent chance), in part, because he's originally from Athens and took a visit to campus recently.
However, the other finalists, particularly Alabama, shouldn't be counted out.
Newell is one of the leaders of a Montverde Academy program that is rated No. 1 nationally in this season’s opening edition of the SBLive/Sports Illustrated Power 25, marking the third year in a row the Eagles have begun the season ranked No. 1 in America.
Here's what On3 had to say about Newell as a prospect in its scouting report:
"Asa Newell is a lengthy forward with a projectable frame. The frame is what you notice from the second he walks on the floor. The lefty has soft touch with range that extends beyond the three-point line, especially off the catch. The jump shot can get inconsistent, would like to see him get the balance right. He is comfortable driving left aggressively. He is an instinctive offensive rebounder, and he is not afraid to mix it up in traffic and hunt put-back dunks. Newell will need to continue developing the right hand and progressing with his middle game. Strength will also be a thing with the 6-foot-9 forward. However, with his size, skill set, and quick-twitch athleticism, when his motor runs hot, there is a lot of production he brings to the court.”
