Oceanside Collegiate wins second straight SCHSL baseball state championship

Landsharks sweep Gray Collegiate to capture the Class 2-A crown

Oceanside Collegiate Academy swept Gray Collegiate Academy in two games to win the SCHSL baseball 2-A state championship.

It was the Landsharks’ second state title in a row. Last year, Oceanside Collegiate won the 3-A state championship before changing classifications due to SCHSL realignment.

Chase Jarnigan, a College of Charleston commit, pitched a no-hitter through five innings and drove in two runs with a first-inning single as the Landsharks won 4-2 in Game 2 to complete the sweep.

Oceanside Collegiate (28-5) got all of its runs in the first inning.

The War Eagles scored twice in the sixth before Jackson Sobel, a Georgia Tech commit, came in to shut the door. Sobel, who also had a sacrifice fly in the first inning, was the 2-A state pitcher of the year.

After winning the SCHSL 3-A state baseball championship last year, Oceanside Collegiate was reclassified to 2-A where it won a second straight state title.

London Spires came on in relief after the rough start for Gray Collegiate and hurled six scoreless innings. Brent Stukes was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Zeb Taylor had an RBI.

It was a familiar heartbreaking finish for Gray Collegiate. The War Eagles were state runners-up last year as well.

The War Eagles incurred an especially tough defeat in Game 1 when they had two runners thrown out at the plate in a 1-0 loss.

Oceanside Collegiate’s Andrew Bowers, who has signed with Coastal Carolina, threw a two-hitter through five innings with six strikeouts. Jake Klein struck out three in 1 2/3 innings and Sobel got the last out for the save.

For the season, Sobel was 8-0 with a 1.06 earned run average and 99 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings.

Stukes, a North Greenville commit, scattered six hits and struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings.
