McKinney senior power forward Alex Anamekwe announced his commitment to Texas on Thursday evening.

Anamekwe revealed his decision to play for the Longhorns in a post on Twitter.

The 6-foot-9 forward was previously committed to SMU until decomitting and taking an official visit to Austin in late April. He also holds offers from Alabama, North Texas, Oral Roberts, Texas Tech, Tulsa and Utah State.

Anamekwe was an instrumental part of McKinney’s run to the UIL’s Class 6A state championship game and the program’s first state tournament appearance since 1928.

He helped lead the Lions to a 35-6 record and Region I-6A championship while averaging 10.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game and anchoring a stout interior defense.

Anamekwe developed a reputation as one of the state’s top crunch-time playmakers too with clutch performances throughout the postseason.

He buried a game-winning shot with 1.8 seconds remaining to lift McKinney past Richardson in the regional quarterfinals.

Anamekwe struck again in the state semifinals when he deflected a pass and threw down a two-handed dunk to secure a 68-66 Lions’ victory over Austin Westlake in the waning seconds of double overtime.

Anamekwe also earned a spot on SBLive’s All-North Texas Basketball teams for his performance during the 2021-22 season.
