2023 Texas (UIL) state softball championship live updates: What happened in 4A, 5A, 6A titles

Updates, recaps, top performers from the final day of the 4A, 5A and 6A high school state softball championships in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas high school softball season is done.

All six UIL state champions have been crowed after the 4A, 5A and 6A University of Texas' Red and Charline McCombs Field on Saturday.

Calallen beat Liberty for its first UIL Class 4A title, Montgomery Lake Creek repeated as 5A champions and Pearland came back to topple Denton-Guyer in the 6A championship to finish the season Saturday evening.

CLASS 6A

Final: Pearland 4, Denton Guyer 2

--Abigail Gutierrez logged six strikeouts, allowed one earned run, five hits and two walks in a complete game start for Pearland. She retired the side in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. (4-2, Pearland — bottom 7th)

--Hailey Golden drove in Layla Bennett with a single to left field to tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. (4-2, Pearland — bottom 5th)

--Pearland takes the lead. Oilers load the bases in the bottom of the second and produce three runs — Mann from third on a walk, Njus from third on a Golden single to right field and a Schweitzer sacrifice fly. (3-2, Pearland — bottom 2nd)

--Guyer strikes first with two runs in the opening frame. (2-0, Guyer — top 1st)

CLASS 5A

(Final): Montgomery Lake Creek 8, New Braunfels Canyon 0

--Ava Brown has 10 strikeouts and has struck out the side in three innings. Just a dominant showing from the Florida signee. Lake Creek is in position to secure this one. (6-0, Lake Creek — top 6th)

--Ava Brown struck out the side in the second inning after the Lake Creek defense retired the side in the first inning.  (1-0, Lake Creek — bottom 3rd)

--Hello, Ava Brown. The Florida commit sends a deep ball to the left-center wall on the game's second at-bat, scoring Maddox McKee. (1-0, Lake Creek — top 1st)

CLASS 4A

FINAL: Corpus Christi Calallen 9, Liberty 7

--Liberty gets two back. Key's double to right center drove in Kylee Bishop and Brookelyn Taylor scored Marina Bourgeios on a single to left field. (9-5, Clallen — top 6th)

--The Wildcats pour on a scoring onslaught. They manage five hits in the fifth, including three consecutive RBI singles (the third was a fielder's choice). (8-3, Callalen — bottom 5th)

--What a catch to end the top of the fifth. Mia Flores dives to catch a line drive with two outs and the bases loaded and Calallen preserves its lead. (5-3, Calallen — top 5th)

--Liberty subs out sophomore ace Brookelyn Taylor after 3 2/3 innings after she gave up five runs, nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Freshman Kylie Bishop checks into the circle on a big stage. (bottom 4th)

--Floodgates open: Jordyn Thibodeaux singled up the middle and Braelyn Bailey was walked to load the bases. That set up Mackenzie Mounts, who ripped a two-RBI double to right center. Calallen takes its first lead. (5-3, Calallen — bottom 4th)

--Here comes Calallen. Alaunah Almarez hit a solo shot home run to left field to open the inning to cut Liberty's lead to one, and the Wildcat bats are alive. (3-2, Liberty — bottom 4th)

--Defense! Calallen turned an inning-ending double play to get out of a jam. (4-1, Liberty — top 2nd)

--Megan Geyer scored from third on a sacrifice fly from Alaunah Almarez. She reached second on a double to center field, then advanced to third on a Flores single. (3-1, Liberty — bottom 1st)

--Hollie Thomas tripled to left center, driving in Reese Evans. (3-0, Liberty — top 1st)

--With runners on second a third, Alex Wiley singled to deep right field, the outfielder committed an error on the catch and Liberty scored two — Reese Evans and Bailee Slack. (2-0, Liberty — top 1st)

--Liberty pounces early. Reese Evans reaches second base on a head-first dive and lets out an arm-pumping celebration. Liberty puts runners on second and third quickly. (0-0, top 1st)

--Can Liberty win its third straight state title? Or will Calallen win its first state title?
