ROUND ROCK, Texas — After reaching the UIL Baseball State Tournament last season and getting knocked out during the state semifinals, the Abbott Panthers made the most of their return to the state tournament.
The Panthers jumped all over Fayetteville early on to seize a commanding five-run advantage.
But despite a late rally and comeback attempt from the Lions, Abbott used a seventh-inning insurance run and excellent situational pitching to fend off Fayetteville for a 6-5 win in the Class 1A UIL Baseball State Championship on Thursday morning at Dell Diamond.
Preston Pustejovsky was voted MVP of the 1A state title game after throwing for four strikeouts, eight hits allowed, four earned runs allowed, a walk and a .258 OBA through 6.1 innings pitched for the Panthers.

Fayetteville (20-7) wraps up its 2023 campaign following the loss, which snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Lions and ended their pursuit of a second 1A state title in the last three years.
Abbott (23-4), meanwhile, improved to 8-1 during the postseason with the victory and captured its first Texas high school baseball state title since 2017 during the Panthers' fifth trip to the UIL Baseball State Tournament.
