Austin Westlake built an early lead and rode a shutdown defense to a 20-14 win over Lake Travis in a showdown between Texas high school football powers on Friday night.

Chaparrals (4-0) running back Jack Kayser bolted 40 yards for a  touchdown run on fourth and two to put Westlake up 17-7 in the third quarter.

Lake Travis mounted a more than six-minute drive late in an effort to find the endzone, but the Chaparrals held on.

Kayser finished the game's hero with 29 carries for 162 rushing yards and a touchdown.

The Cavaliers got off to a hot 4-0 start and debuted in the SBLive Texas Power 25 on Monday at No. 22 with a signature win in Week 2 against Power 25-ranked Cibolo Steele.

Austin Westlake is the No. 4 team in the state of Texas. The Chaparrals opened the year on the bubble of the SBLive/Sports Illustrated Power 25 national rankings, and have risen to No. 23.

Westlake struck first, scoring on the opening 10-play, 75-yard drive courtesy of a Paxton Land 11-yard read-option keeper.

Westlake beat Lake Travis 35-20 in 2022.
