Everything you missed in second round of UIL state football playoffs

As the area round of the Texas high school football playoffs continues, we're taking a closer look at the top finishes across all 12 UIL playoff brackets.

Now, we examine the top games in Class 5A, spanning the Division I and Division II brackets.

The area round runs through the end of Saturday, regional round is Nov. 23-25, the regional finals Nov. 30-Dec. 2, setting up state championship week: semifinals and finals Dec. 7-9 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Here are eight Class 5A area round games you should not have missed:

TEXAS 5A PLAYOFF BRACKETS (DIVISION I, DIVISION II)

A&M CONSOLIDATED UPSETS FULSHEAR

Texas A&M Consolidated knocked off previously unbeaten Fulshear, 31-19, Friday night in Rosenberg.

The No. 3-ranked Chargers were 11-0 entering the game but the Tigers took a 14-7 lead on a touchdown pass from Will Hargett to Ellis Myers.

After that, Consolidated (8-3) never trailed.

Running back Trey Taylor had a pair of touchdown runs for Consolidated, which moves on to the regional semifinals in the 5A Division I bracket. Davion Godley had touchdown runs of 85 and 72 yards for Fulshear — which beat A&M 50-38 last year.

ABILENE WINS 8TH IN A ROW

Abilene secured its first double-digit win total in seven years with a 31-21 win over Denton Ryan on Friday at Crowley ISD Multipurpose Stadium in Fort Worth in a Class 5A Division I area game.

Down by four points, the Eagles scored 21 points in a row to pull away for the win. Quarterback Dylan Slack threw two touchdowns to tie Abilene (10-2) the lead at the break and extended it in the third. In the fourth quarter, Jadrian Carrillo returned a fumble on a punt for a score for Abilene.

Denton Ryan (8-3) lost starting quarterback Braeden Mussett in the second quarter.

Abilene faces Justin Northwest next week.

RICHLAND LOCKS UP WIN IN OT

Running back Michael Turner scored in overtime to help North Richland Hills Richland secure a 48-47 win over Barbers Hill in Hutto in a 5A Division I area game.

Turner, an uncommitted junior with 12 offers, had a 1-yard run to help the Royals comeback from a 34-9 halftime deficit.

Richland (12-0) gave up a 13-yard touchdown run to Cooper Lucas. The Eagles (9-3) went for two and didn’t get it.

Turner had 45 carries for 309 yards and four touchdowns. Barbers Hill quarterback Kody Fuentes threw for 287 and four touchdowns and ran for another.

Richland will face Forney in the regional semifinals.

BROWNSVILLE WINS BATTLE OF VETERANS MEMORIALS

Brownsville Veterans Memorial picked up a 17-7 win over Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in a Class 5A Division I Region IV area game.

Scoreless through the first half, Corpus Christi (8-4) struck first on a touchdown pass from Billy White III to Ryan Wilson.

The Chargers scored the next 17 to rally for the victory. Storm Montoya hit Gilbert Trillo for a 27-yard score with less than 2 minutes to go in the third, making it 10-7. Alvin Trevillion’s 4-yard run with 1:26 left in the fourth ice the win for the Chargers, now 10-2. The win was the eighth in a row.

Next up is a regional semifinal against PSJA North.

ALEDO KEEPS WIN STREAK ALIVE

Aledo, the defending 5A Division I state champions, held off Lubbock Cooper, 48-31, in a game held at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.

The Bearcats improved to 12-0 this year and have won the last 26 in a row dating back to last year’s title run.

LSU signee Davhon Keys made a big impact early on offense with a pair of short touchdown runs to get the Bearcats on the board. The Pirates (8-4) tied the game at 14 in the second quarter but Aledo led 28-17 at the break. Cooper pulled within four, 35-31, late in the fourth but was shut out in the fourth by the Bearcats’ defense.

Jayden Hibbler had four touchdowns on the ground for Cooper.

Keys finished with three touchdown runs out of the Wildcat formation, while Ray Guillory had a pair of rushing scores as well for Aledo.

Aledo will play the winner of Amarillo/Red Oak, which meets on Saturday.

GUERRA HELPS PSJA NORTH ROLL

PSJA North got a four-touchdown effort from Ethan Guerra in a 42-7 win over Victoria East on Friday.

The Class 5A Division I No. 7-ranked Raiders built a 35-0 lead over the Titans.

Guerra had touchdown runs of 9, 6, 12 and 65 yards in the win. Quarterback Ale Aparicio ran for a score and passed for another for the Raiders (12-0).

Next up is a showdown with Brownsville Veterans Memorial next Friday at 4 p.m. at PSJA Stadium in Pharr in the regional semifinals.

LATE FIELD GOAL LIFTS TEXAS HIGH

Texarkana Texas High School escaped with an area championship on a late field goal and two defensive stands.

The Longhorns beat Mansfield Summit 17-14 on Friday, with Franklin Delk’s 20-yard field goal accounting for the game-winning score with 5:47 left. The Longhorns’ defense then held off the Jaguars (8-4) twice to secure the win.

David Potter, who threw for 161 yards, threw his only touchdown pass to Shavante Montgomery in the third to allow Texas High to tie the game.

Summit had 161 yards on the ground and one score from Amare Burgess.

Texarkana (11-1) advances to play Lovejoy, the No. 5th-ranked Class 5A Division II team, next week.

OSBORNE SPARKS FORNEY TO CLOSE WIN

Running back Javian Osborne helped Forney take a lead and then the defense made a stop on a 2-point conversion to lock up a 26-24 win over Frisco Lone Star at Eagle Stadium in Allen on Friday.

Osborne ran for 200 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries. His 63-yard run helped give the Jackrabbits (11-1) the cushion needed to hold off the Rangers (10-2)

With 30 seconds left, Collin Blackstock threw a touchdown to Davian Groce to help the Rangers pull within two. Lone Star went for it but Landry Hopkins made the tackle to seal the win.

Forney will face Richland in a 5A Division I Region II semifinals.
