Terry Bussey sets 2 records in Texas high school football championship

Texas A&M commit, nation's No. 1 athlete's 97-yard pass, 93-yard run break UIL 2A title records in first half win over Tolar

Terry Bussey set the Texas high school football state championships ablaze.

The 5-star Texas A&M commit broke off a 93-yard run and threw a 97-yard touchdown pass in the first half of Timpson's 49-7 UIL Class 2A Division I state championship win over Tolar on Wednesday night. The Bears won their first state crown in school history after falling short in the semifinals each of the last three years.

Both of Bussey's long-gain TDs set Class 2A championship records for longest touchdown run and scoring pass, respectively, and helped Timpson establish a 21-0 first half lead. (Scroll to the top of the post to watch both plays).

Bussey, the nation's No. 1 athlete, No. 30 overall prospect and No. 5 recruit in Texas, completed 12 of 15 pass attempts for 311 yards and four touchdown throws (that's a 366 QB rating, for those keeping track), and added 153 yards and two TDs on the ground. All in all, he had his hand in 466 yards of offense and six touchdowns.

He's inarguably the best player to ever come through Timpson, and has led the Bears (15-0) to their first state title in program history.

Timpson ends remarkable run with 'truly amazing' Texas state football title triumph

After missing the first three games of the season recovering from a May knee surgery, he's been nothing short of spectacular, leading Timpson with 1,785 passing yards (69.1 percent completion rate) and 24 TDs, 1,165 rushing yards (12.7 yards per carry) and 17 more TDs on his feet.

The significance is not lost on Timpson coach Kerry Therwhanger.

"To be able to be around a kid who it this committed, this sharp, this talented, it's just been a pleasure," Therwhanger told SBLive in September. "I keep telling my younger guys on staff to enjoy it, because it doesn't come around that often at our level. A lot of these 6A guys are probably used to is, so it's just been a joy to be around, be associated with it and to watch him to his thing.

"We see it every day in practice, we see some of the stuff he's capable of, so it's not really as shocking to us on Friday nights as it is to some folks."
