Look: Port Neches-Groves edges South Oak Cliff to win Texas 5A Division 2 state football title
ARLINGTON, TEXAS — Kicker Gio Oceguera connected on four field goals to lift Port Neches-Groves to a 20-17 victory over South Oak Cliff on Saturday afternoon in the Texas (UIL) 5A Division 2 state football championship game at AT&T Stadium.
Oceguera was named offensive MVP for breaking a UIL 5A Division 2 title-game record by hitting on all four of his field goal attempts from 32, 21, 31 and 23 yards.
Shea Adams scored on a 1-yard run for Port Neches-Groves' lone touchdown that gave his team the lead with 3:32 left in the fourth quarter.
Isaiah Nguyen rushed for a game-high 111 yards on 19 carries for Port Neches-Groves while quarterback Connor Bailey passed for 179 yards.
Danny Green Jr. led South Oak Cliff (13-3) with 104 yards rushing on 13 carries and he scored on runs of 3 and 44 yards.
It marked the first state football title for Port Neches-Groves (15-1) since 1975.
The game was a rematch of the 2022 Class 5A Division 2 title in which South Oak Cliff won 23-14.
