Stony Point defeats Brennan: Live score, Texas high school boys basketball playoffs recap (3/1/2024)

The playoffs continue for Texas high school boys basketball this weekend, and the field is thinning out as teams continue their push for a state championship.

Nationally-ranked Stony Point and Brennan, two of the top teams in Texas, will square off in the UIL Class 6A Region 4 semifinals on Friday night, with the winner advancing to the region finals on Saturday.

Stony Point (35-1) enters the matchup ranked No. 3 in Texas and No. 21 in the SBLive/Sports Illustrated Power 25 national rankings. The Tigers knocked out Westlake with a 49-35 win earlier this week in the regional quarterfinals.

Brennan (31-4), the No. 5 team in SBLive’s Texas rankings, raced past Jay with a 35-point win in the quarterfinals. Since losing by eight points to national No. 7 Link Academy (Missouri) in November, the Bears have won 25 games in a row.

Stony Point vs. Brennan is being streamed by the NFHS Network and is scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m. CT. The winner play O'Connor in the region semifinals Saturday.

FOURTH QUARTER

-- Pandemonium at Northside Gym. Devaughn Hewitt nails a three pointer out of the inbound pass, and time runs off the clock one second later. Stony Points wins 69-68 and advances to the region finals tomorrow against O'Connor.

-- Up by one point with seven seconds to go, Brennan junior Camden Cowgill goes 1-for-2 from the free throw line to put the Bears ahead 68-66.

-- Brennan forces a turnover while Stony Point tries to run time off the clock. The Bears take advantage of the turnover and offensive rebounds, as Cameron Walker cleans up a miss to give Brennan a 67-66 lead with under 30 seconds remaining.

-- As he's done several times in the second half, Kingston Flemings dribbles around defenders and gets to the basket. Brennan trails by one, 66-65, with less than two minutes to go.

-- After Isaiah Ward ties the game for Brennan, Junior Goodlet drains a three to put Stony Point back ahead 66-63. 

-- Neither team has been particularly strong at the free throw line tonight in this close game. Moseley goes 1-for-2 to give Stony Point a 63-61 lead.

-- Stony Point is back in front, 62-61, after Josiah Moseley gets position in the paint and cleans up a miss.

-- Villanova signee Josiah Moseley hits a stepback three of his own on the other end. Stony Point trails 61-60 with under six minutes to go.

-- Flemings is feeling it. The four-star junior knocks down a stepback three-pointer to give Brennan a 61-57 lead. 

-- Camden Cowgill hits a three from the wing to give Brennan the lead, 58-56. Stony Point calls a timeout to regroup.

-- Kingston Flemings grabs the rebound and goes coast to coast, finishing with a slam to bring Brennan within one point of Stony Point.

THIRD QUARTER

-- Amoni Francis cleans up a miss by Cowgill to cap off a massive third quarter for Brennan. After falling behind by 15 points earlier in the third quarter, the Bears trail by just three, 54-51, entering the fourth.

-- After Brennan sophomore Talon Todd hits a three, Kingston Flemings throws down a thunderous slam to make it a five-point game. The Bears are right back in this. 

-- Brennan strings a few stops and scores together. Donovan Criss hits another three, his third of the game, cutting it back to 44-36.

-- Junior Goodlet finishes a tough drive to put Stony Point ahead by 15, its largest lead of the night.

SECOND QUARTER

-- Buntyn banks the ball high off the glass for a Stony Point layup, the final points of the quarter. The Tigers lead 40-27 following a strong first half.

-- Uzziah Buntyn and Isaiah Moseley sink back-to-back threes to give Stony Point a 38-27 lead late in the half.

-- Donovan Criss knocks down another three from the corner and is fouled on the shot, but he misses the free throw. The Bears have left some points at the line in the first half.

-- Right after Brennan's three, Stony Point junior Davaughn Hueitt hits a three from the top of the key to push the Tigers' lead back to double digits, 30-20.

-- Donovan Criss buries a corner three to get Brennan back within single digits. The Bears trail 27-20 a few minutes into the second quarter.

FIRST QUARTER

-- Four-star junior Kingston Flemings is fouled by Stony Point on a halfcourt heave at the buzzer, sending him to the line for three shots with less than a second on the clock. Flemings goes 0-for-3, so Stony Point leads 23-11 after a dominant first quarter.

-- The run continues for Stony Point with an impressive fadeaway jumper by Isaiah Moseley. The Villanove signee is making an impact early in this one.

-- It's a 9-0 run for Stony Point, as Elijah Clemons finishes a fastbreak layup through contact. The Tigers lead 15-9 with under three minutes to go in the quarter.

-- Camden Cowgill pulls up from long range and nails the three to give Brennan a 9-6 lead. 

-- Stony Point ties the game 6-6 with a pair of free throws by Uzziah Buntyn. 

-- Isaiah Ward spins on his way to the basket for a layup, and Brennan leads 6-2 early.

-- Junior Goodlet gets the scoring started inside for Stony Point, and Isaiah Ward responds with a bucket for Brennan. It's 2-2 in the first minute of this region semifinal.

-- Teams are on the court warming up after a brief delay due to the first semifinal game going into overtime. Tipoff for this game will be close to 7:00 p.m. CT.
