Preseason national high school wrestling rankings update (10/18/2023); Super 32 preview

Breaking down the nation's toughest high school wrestling tournament and our updated national high school wrestling rankings for every weight class

Preseason national high school wrestling rankings update (10/18/2023); Super 32 preview /

Note: When referencing “ranked wrestlers,” we are referring only to wrestlers who appear in the Top 25 or their weight class in the SBLive National High School Wrestling Rankings, not honorable mention.

It’s here, Super 32 is here! The high-caliber tournament has become the toughest high school tournament in the land in recent years. And this year’s edition is no exception. We will provide a brief overview of the weights.

With this update, we will be putting the wrestlers where they are wrestling at Super 32, regardless of team affiliation. During the high school season, and as we draw closer to its beginning, we will only have one guy per team in the rankings at each weight.

Right now, some of the decisions are unknown. For example, Faith Christian Academy in Pennsylvania will have two wrestlers at 106-pouns in these rankings. Eventually, one of those guys (Joe Bachmann or Kole Davidheiser) will move to 113. Our guess is Bachmann will be at 106 for big events like Ironman and will likely go 113 for the other events as Davidheiser is a small 106-pounder.

Some of my ranking decisions will be explained below, but if you have any questions or info to help improve the rankings, please reach out to me at billybwrestling@yahoo.com .

At 106, our number one is Dominic Deputy (Chestnut Ridge, Pennsylvania). Deputy owns a head-to-head win over No. 2 Joe Bachmann from the Journeymen World Challenge last spring. During last year’s high school season, Deputy split with Ayden Smith (Notre Dame-Green Pond, Pennsylvania) at PowerAde. Smith beat Bachmann at the Pennsylvania Club Duals at 113-pounds. So, Deputy has a head-to-head win and a common opponent win over Bachmann.

With 17 of the top 25 in the house, there will certainly be fireworks at what always proves to be one of the more unpredictable weight classes in the early part of the season. With the presence of No. 3 Ignacio Villasenor (Pomona, Colorado) and No. 4 Grey Burnett (Perrysburg, Ohio), we could see two explosive semi-final showdowns.

No. 8 Rocco Cassioppi (Honenegah, Illinois) defeated No. 9 Ezekiel Witt (Junction City, Kansas) at the Elite 8 Folkstyle Duals in September. At those duals, Witt also lost to No. 16 Gabe Ballard (Northampton, Pennsylvania). Witt and No. 12 Rocco Hayes (Carl Sandburg, Illinois) have traded wins with No. 11 Ayden Dodd (Perrysburg, Ohio) over the summer (Fargo and Junior National Freestyle Duals respectively).

No. 10 Mason Haines (Dundee, Michigan) just emerged by placing third at the Grappler Fall Classic, where he dropped Dodd and No. 13 Wyatt Lees (Detroit Catholic Central, Michigan).

We placed Ballard after Fargo placers Lees, No. 14 Shamus Regan (Wyoming Seminary, Pennsylvania), and No. 15 Michael Batista (Blair Academy, New Jersey) since he picked up a loss to Henry Aslikyan (Birmingham, California) at the Elite 8 affair. All of them are at Super 32 except Aslikyan, Ballard and Batista.

The No. 1 113-pounder, Chris Kiser (Ponca City, Oklahoma), will not be at Super 32, but the next three guys in the rankings will be. World Champion Paul Kelly (Christian Brothers Academy, New Jersey) sits in our No. 2 position on the strength of wins over No. 3 Aaron Seidel (Northern Lebanon, Pennsylvania) at the National Freestyle Duals in the spring, and No. 4 Dom Munaretto, a former World Champion, at the U17 Freestyle US Open.

Seidel was pinned in the Fargo FS Championship bout by Kiser. Munaretto tumbled from the No. 1 spot over the spring and summer with losses to Dedrick Navarro (Idaho), Carter Pearson (Iowa), and Dawson Youngblut (Iowa). In all, there are 14 wrestlers who appear in the 113-pound rankings showing up at S32.

Some of those acclaimed wrestlers are, No. 6 Davis Motyka (Wyoming Seminary), who excelled at Fargo, placing in both formats. No. 8 Dru Ayala (Fort Dodge, Iowa), who beat Motyka at Fargo, but ended up placing behind him, fourth to sixth.

No. 11 Landon Sidun (Norwin, Pennsylvania) is a highly touted freshman, who won the 16U FS title at Fargo. Sidun and No. 12 Ayden Smith (Notre Dame-Green Pond, Pennsylvania) took turns beating each other at the U17 FS US Open. No. 13 Jermaine Peace (Cane Bay, South Carolina) and No. 15 JoJo Uhorchuk (Signal Mountain, Tennessee) complete the top 15 combatants entered.

For now, we are leaving World Champ Marcus Blaze (Perrysburg, Ohio) at 120-pounds. He won the world title at 55 kg, which is roughly 121-pounds, and that was in late summer, so he occupies the No. 1 slot at 120 in our rankings. 17 wrestlers who are ranked litter the 120-pound contingency.

The No. 2 and No. 3 wrestlers at this weight will be at Super 32, Anthony Knox (St. John Vianney, New Jersey) and Christian Castillo (Valiant Prep, Arizona). Both have won Super 32 crowns in the past. Knox gets the nod as No. 2 despite Castillo being a former World champion based on Knox’s Who’s No. 1 win from 2022.

No. 6 Seth Mendoza (Mt. Carmel, Illinois), No. 7 Nathan Desmond (Wyoming Seminary), and No. 10 Ethan Rivera (Lake Highland Prep, Florida) are the last of the top 10 guys who will be at Super 32. Castillo beat Mendoza two straight in the best-of-three US Open final. Mendoza beat Desmond and Rivera at Fargo.

Wyoming Seminary’s Luke Lilledahl is No. 1 at 126. He and Jax Forrest (Bishop McCort, Pennsylvania) have a back-and-forth history with each other. Lilledahl won the right to defend his world title by beating Troy Spratley twice in the U20 FS US Open finals. Spratley defeated Forrest to reach that final. Lilledahl would go on to take silver at this year’s worlds. Forrest will be at Super 32, but not Lilledahl.

The next two ranked guys in the Super 32 field are No. 5 Nikolaus O’Neill (Malvern Prep, Pennsylvania) and No. 8 JJ McComas-Rogers (Stillwater, Oklahoma). O’Neill pinned No. 6 Dillon Campbell (Liberty Christian, Ohion) en route to last year’s Escape the Rock crown. Campbell beat No. 12 Jake Hockaday (Brownsburg, Indiana) for the bronze at Fargo.

No. 7 Gage Walker (Bixby, Oklahoma) was seventh at Fargo with a loss to Hockaday, but in folkstyle he defeated McComas-Rogers, the Fargo runner-up in his weight, three times during the high school season. No. 10 Eren Sement (Council Rock North, Pennsylvania) pinned Hockaday at Fargo and beat No. 13 Jake Crapps (Cass, Georgia) at the Elite 8 Folkstyle Duals. Sement, Hockaday, and Crapps will be at Super 32.

As will the next four guys in the rankings after Crapps – Anthony Mutarelli (Malvern Prep), Noah Nininger (Staunton River, Virginia), Jackson Blum (Lowell, Michigan), and Colby Crouch (Troy (Triad), Illinois). At 126-pounds, 15 of the top 25 are taking the mats.

Ten of the top thirteen, and 14 of the top 25, 132-pounders in the nation will be present at S32, including No. 1 Ben Davino (St. Charles East, Illinois), whose only blemish on his record over the last year was at the world championships. Davino downed No. 3 Kyler Larkin (Valiant Prep, Arizona), 4-2, at this year’s Who’s No.1. Larkin will be at S32, so there could be a rematch in the finals.

Two of the next three entries are from Arizona, one is a teammate of Larkin. Bo Bassett (Bishop McCort) is No. 4 in our rankings followed by Sergio Vega (Sunnyside, Arizona) at No. 5 and Adrian Meza (Valiant Prep), who is No. 6. Bassett and Davino are returning S32 champs.

Three of the next four wrestlers at S32 hail from Pennsylvania, No. 8 Matthew Botello (Wyoming Seminary), No. 9 Tahir Parkins (Nazareth), and No. 11 Brandt Harer (Montgomery). Drew Gorman (Buford, GA) came down from 138 and sits in the No. 10 spot in the rankings.

Two Blair Academy grapplers occupy the next positions in the rankings with No. 12 Matty Lopes and No. 13 Billy DeKraker. DeKraker will be at S32. Harer has a recent win over Nikolaus O’Neill and O’Neill beat Lopes in last year’s Escape the Rock finals.

Saying 138lbs is deep, is a bit of an understatement since 18 of the top 25 guys in the country will be at S32. Two Californians occupy the top two spots at 138, No. 1 Aden Valencia (Ann Sobrato) and Daniel Zepeda (Gilroy). Neither is attending S32.

Six top ten guys headline the field with No. 3 Landon Robideau (St. Michael Albertville, Minnesota), No. 4 Alex Braun (Woodbury, Minnesota), No. 6 Paul Kelly (Poway, California), No. 7 Omar Ayoub (Dublin Coffman, Ohio), No. 8 Cooper Hilton (Baylor, Tennessee), and No. 9 Luke Simcox (Central Mountain, Pennsylvania).

The next run of 138-pound S32 competitors is from the No. 11 to 15 positions in our rankings. No. 11 Chase Van Hoven (Brooke Point, Virginai) just beat No. 12 Maddox Shaw (Thomas Jefferson, Pennsylvania) at the Tyrant Columbus Day Duals. Shaw beat No. 13 Dalton Perry (Central Mountain, Pennsylvania) and No. 15 Sam Herring (Bishop McCort) at the Ultimate Club Duals. Perry beat Herring at last year’s PowerAde tournament. No. 14 Yandro Soto (Lake Highland Prep) defeated Herring in the U17 PanAm Finals.

It’s unclear if No. 1 Brock Mantanona (Palm Desert, California) will indeed be back at 144lbs, and the uncertainty will continue as he is not attending S32. The No. 2 through No. 5 grapplers will be throwing down, though.

No. 2 Pierson Manville (State College, Pennsylvania) is considered the favorite. Manville beat No. 3 Kollin Rath (Bethlehem Catholic, Pennsylvania) at Who’s No. 1. No. 4 Jaxon Joy (Wadsworth, Ohio) and No. 5 Cameron Catrabone (Williamsville, New York) headline a bracket that equals 138-pounds lofty total of 18 top 25 wrestlers.

August Hibler (Bergen Catholic, New Jersey) is the No. 9 man, while Gabriel Bouyssou (Scituate, Rhode Island) is No. 10. Hibler lost to Bouyssou at the Elite 8 Duals, but won the Journeymen Fall Classic over No. 18 Jason Kwaak (Brentwood, New York). Kwaak pinned Bouyssou in the Journeymen semis. Hibler decked No. 13 Logan Paradice (Baylor, Tennessee) at Elite 8.

From No. 13 to 25, the only wrestler not making a stop at S32 is Landon Drury (Falcon, Colorado). This will mark super freshman Melvin Miller’s (Bishop McCort) first big folkstyle tournament as a high schooler. Miller, who is ranked 17th, won a 16U FS title at Fargo with a win over Kwaak. No. 16 Kane Naaktgeboren (Linn-Mar, Iowa) blanked Miller, 11-0, at the U17 FS US Open.

At 150-poubds “only” 13 of the top 25 are present and, unfortunately, the No. 1 man in the land, PJ Duke (Minisink Valley, New York), is not one of them. Five of the next six wrestlers will take the mats at S32 - No. 2 Vince Bouzakis (Wyoming Seminary), No. 4 Claudio Torres (Lake Highland Prep), No. 5 Collin Gaj (Quakertown, Pennsylvania), No. 6 Miguel Estrada (Frontier, California), and No. 7 Zach Ballante (Paramus Catholic, New Jersey).

As we go up in weight, the number of top 25 guys putting it on the line starts to drop, with only 12 such wrestlers participating at 157 lbs. No. 1 Joe Sealey (Wyoming Seminary) recently withdrew from the competition. No. 2 Willam Henckel (Blair Academy) never signed up, leaving No. 3 LaDarion Lockett (Stillwater, Oklahoma), a World Champion, as the top dog in this bracket.

The next highest wrestlers at S32 are No. 5 Conner Harer (Montgomery, Pennsylvania), No. 6 Cory Thomas (Pontiac, Michigan), and No. 7 Mekhi Neal (St. Mary’s Ryken, Maryland). The No. 9 to 12 wrestlers on the ledger, in order of ranking with the first three from California – No. 10 Leo Contino (Buchanan), Joseph Antonio (St. John Bosco), Andrew Barbosa (Palm Desert), and Matthew Henrich (Southern Regional, New Jersey).

We’ll see 15 top 25 guys at 165, including the top three, No. 1 Ethan Birden (Dubblin Coffman, Ohio), No. 2 Alessio Perentin (Delbarton, New Jersey), and No. 3 Shawn Taylor (West Allegheny, Pennsylvania).

No. 6 Jordan Chapman (Cranford, New Jersey) and No. 7 Dom Bambinelli (Mill Creek, Georgia) are in the mix. As are the No. 10 and 11 guys, Nick Kunstek (Pottsville, Pennsylvania) and Latrell Schafer (Veterans, Georgia).

No. 1 Angelo Ferrari (Melissa, Texas) secured his mantel atop 175 lbs with a 4-2 win over Ty Eise (Ponderosa, Colorad) at Who’s No. 1. Ferrari and Eise will be skipping S32.

With just ten of the top 25 grapplers appearing, 175 is one of the more wide-open weight classes. The highest-ranked wrestler stepping on the scale is No. 5 Adam Waters (Faith Christian Academy). Next in line are No. 7 Cole Han-Lindemyer (Farmington, MN) and No. 8 Ryan Burton (St. Joe Regional, New Jersey). No. 13 Bryce Burkett (Watertown, Minnesota) and No. 15 Braidon Woodward (Canisteo-Greenwood, New York) round out the top 15 wrestlers in the bracket.

No. 1 Aeoden Sinclair (Milton, Wisconsin) defeated Connor Mirasola (West Bend West, Wisconsin) at Who’s No. 1. Sinclair is one of 12 top 25 wrestlers entered, including four of the top 5 with No. 3 Rune Lawrence (Frazier, Pennsylvania), No. 4 Harvey Ludington (Brick Memorial, New Jersey), and No. 5 Tucker Hogan (Daniel Boone, Pennsylvania) joining the fray.

Three more top 10 guys make this a very top-heavy weight – No. 7 Karson Tompkins (Midlothian, TX), No. 9 Cade Ziola (Skutt Catholic, Nebraska), and No. 10 Marco Christiansen (Minnetonka, Minnesota).

There are not many wrestlers ranked in the top ten at 215 attending S32. But many of the 12-ranked guys come from the “Middle of the pack”. No. 1 Cody Merrill (Gilroy, California) tore through the Fargo bracket then won his Who’s No. 1 bout with No. 5 Sawyer Bartelt (South Dade, Florida), but he is setting this affair out, leaving No. 2 and returning S32 champ Jude Correa (Wyoming Seminary) as the title favorite.

No. 6 Dresahun Ross (Fort Dodge, Iowa) is moving up from 195 where he was a double champ at Fargo in the 16U division. After him, we go to No. 10 before we see our next ranked grappler, Dillon Bechtold (Owen J Roberts, Pennsylvania). No. 11 to 15 follow Bechtold – No. 11 Rylan Kuhn (St. Pius X (KC), Missouri), Oscar Williams (Edmond North, Oklahoma), Hudson Skove (Rumson-Fair Haven, NJ), Anthony Harris (St. Peter Prep, New Jersey), and Cy Kruse (Totino-Grace, Minnesota).

We have another run of consecutive guys after skipping No. 16 Brennan Morgan (Central Valley, Pennsylvania), who was entered but appears to have withdrawn. Aidan Schlett (St. Joe Regional, New Jersey) is No. 17. No. 18 Quin Morgan (Mounds View, Minnesota) just pinned No. 19 Michael Mocco (Cardinal Gibbons, Florida) in 33 seconds at the Journeymen Fall Classic. Kruse beat Quin Morgan in the Journeymen finals.

The 285 weight class has the least number of ranked wrestlers with just eight, the highest one being No. 6 Nicholas Sahakian (St. John Bosco). Amery, Wisconsin’s Koy Hopke’s Fargo title over Aden Attao (Idaho) pushed him to the top of the 285lb ranks.

Following Sahakian are the No. 8 and 9 wrestlers, Spencer Lanosga (Jesuit, Louisiana), who just beat No. 9 Parker Ferrell (Christiansburg, Virginia) at the Elite 8 Duals. Ferrell won the heavyweight belt here last year and hung a 2-1 loss on No. 11 Daniel Herrera (Ames, Iowa) at Elite 8.
