Wyoming Seminary dominates National Preps; Poway (California) and Edmond North (Oklahoma) win state crowns

Wyoming Seminary put on one of the most dominant performances ever at the National Preps Tournament last weekend, while two of the nation's biggest wrestling states - California and Oklahoma crowned state champions.

Here is the latest in our weekly National Wrestling Notebook.

Wyoming Seminary dominates National Prep Tournament

Ten Wyoming Seminary wrestlers secured gold in their weight classes this weekend at Lehigh University as the Blue Knights ran away from runner-up Blair Academy from New Jersey, 395.5-270.

The only team race came down to second with Malvern Prep nine points behind Blair and Lake Highland Prep sitting just two behind them in fourth (261-259).

No. 1 Joseph Sealey (165) locked down his third consecutive National Prep crown in a weight that featured six nationally ranked wrestlers. Sealey downed No. 11 Emmitt Sherlock (Gilman, Maryland), 10-2, in the finals.

Winning their second championships for the Blue Knights were No. 4 Davis Motyka (113), No. 1 Luke Lilledahl (126), and No. 2 Jude Correa (215). Motyka defeated Malvern Prep’s eighth grade wonder Matthew O’Neill, 7-3. Lilledahl downed Lake Highland Prep’s Charlie DeSena, 7-3. Correa decked Blair’s Cael Mielnik in 59 seconds.

The other Seminary wrestlers who reached the top of the podium were enjoying their first National Prep glory. Freshman Shamus Regan is ranked fifth in the nation and blanked No. 25 Julian Rios (Phillips Andover, MA), 5-0, in the finals. Rios avenged a loss to Gilman’s No. 11 Liam McGettigan from the Beast of the East in the semis.

At 132, No. 7 Matthew Botello authored a mild upset of No. 6 Nick O’Neill, 5-4. O’Neill beat Botello in their previous three meetings this year – Ironman, PowerAde, and the Pennsylvania NP Qualifier. No. 14 Jake Dailey snagged the 190lb title with a 3-2 win over No. 19 Robert Kucharczk (Lake Highland Prep) in the finals.

The Blue Knights’ other three champions won Pennsylvania state tournament titles at various locales last season before transferring to Seminary this year. An upset was executed by No. 4 Nate Desmond in the 120lb finals when he downed Blair’s No. 2 Leo DeLuca, 5-3. Desmond was at Bethlehem Catholic a season ago.

No. 18 Anthony Evanitsky needed overtime to beat Nathan Rickards (Malvern Prep), 2-1 TB2, at 157. Evanitsky achieved state glory at Wyoming Area High School in 2023.

No. 2 Vince Bouzakis won a crown at Notre Dame – Green Pond last season and got by No. 16 Paul Ognissanti (Blair Academy), 13-7, at 157.

No. 11 Dom Federici came up short in his title quest at 175. Michael Trujillo was fifth at 138 and Orest Nazarchuk was eighth at 285 for Wyoming Seminary.

Blair Academy crowned three champions amongst its nine placers, No. 15 Billy DeKraker (138), No. 2 William Henckel (175), and No. 6 Carter Neves (285). All three were favored and made good on those prognostications.

DeKraker beat Lake Highland Prep’s No. 25 Collin Kacena, 3-1. Henckel handed Federici and 7-2 defeat. Neves rolled to a 13-4 major-decision of Northfield Mount Hermon’s James Bechter (honorable mention in the nation).

In addition to DeLuca, Mielnik and Ognissanti, No. 7 Logan Rozynski (144) came in second for the Bucs. No. 19 Michael Batista was fourth at 113 and No. 18 Peter Snyder, a national prep champ at 165 last year, landed in the fifth position at 190.

Malvern Prep’s Jack Consiglio was the event’s other titlist and he edged Rozynski, 2-1, for his third National Prep crown, and second in a row. The senior was second in his other appearance.

In addition to the O’Neill’s and Rickards placing second, the following Malvern wrestlers reached the awards stand, Jason Torres (126) and No. 20 Nick Wehmeyer (190) were third. Placing fifth were Brendan Kelly (106), No. 16 Lukas Littleton (120), and Stosh Zalota (215). Lukas Zalota was sixth at 175 and Jack Chamberlain placed eighth at 165.

A year after posting three champions, Lake Highland Prep was shut out of the title count but did collect three silver medals by DeSena, Kacena, and Kucharczk.

A slew of Highlanders placed third including No. 15 Ethan Rivera (120), Zeno Moore (144, HM), Lucas Boe (150), No. 10 Claudio Torres (157), and Alex Smith (215, HM). No. 19 Jayce Paridon was fourth at 132. Liam Davis was fifth at 113 with Omer Barak taking seventh at 165.

Poway wins California’s single class state tournament

With a state as huge as California, it would make sense for them to have multiple divisions for the wrestling tournament but that is not the case as there is one single champion, which adds to the difficulty and prestige of winning a title there.

Poway outpointed Buchanan in the team race 290.5-255. Gilroy was third with 206 points.

Poway’s seven finalists were the most of any team and their three champions equaled Gilroy for a tournament high. Winning gold for Poway were G. Elias Navida (132, HM), No. 16 Angelo Posada (175), and No. 11 Robert Platt (215).

Navida beat fellow honorable mention wrestler Jesse Grajeda (St. John Bosco), 6-4 in overtime. Navida upset No. 16 Victor Alexander Gutierrez (Central Catholic), 3-1, to reach the finals. Grajeda executed his own upset to reach the finals, surprising No. 15 Elijah Cortez (Gilroy), 3-2.

Poway was impressive in topping second-place Gilroy to win the California single class state wrestling championship.
Poway was impressive in topping second-place Gilroy to win the California single class state wrestling championship

Posada downed Pitman’s Mason Ontiveros, 5-1. Platt reversed the outcome of last year’s 195lb state final by beating JW North’s No. 10 Coby Merrill, 2-1 TB2. Merrill beat Platt in the Doc B Finals this year and state finals last year. Interestingly, Merrill was at Gilroy last year and Platt at Brawley.

Securing state silver for Poway were No. 13 Arseni Kikiniou (106), No. 6 Edwin Sierra (113), No. 3 Paul Kelly (138), and No. 8 Laird Root (150). Mario Carini (144) and Adam Farha (285) were third. Billy Townson (126) and Aliaksandr Kikiniou (165) placed fifth, and Robert Jones (120) landed in the sixth spot.

Buchanan was just one-for-two in the finals with No. 12 Rocklin Zinkin winning gold with a 2-1 ultimate tiebreaker win over Sierra after finishing second a year ago. No. 8 Joseph Toscano was second at 144.

Buchanan earned its points in the consolation rounds with ten additional placers. Blake Woodward (106), Gavin Bauder (138, HM), No. 8 Leo Contino (157), and Branson John (175) claiming bronze.

Ashton Besmer (126) and Bryson Harrington (285) were fourth for Buchanan. Placing fifth was Alec Dansby (215). Finishing seventh were CJ Huerta (120), Pari Ruiz (132, HM), and Jaxtyn Frost (150).

Gilroy was three-for-three in the championship matches. No. 1 Daniel Zepeda beat Kelly 6-2 at 138 after being a runner-up last season. No. 24 Moses Mirabal pulled off a huge upset of Toscano, 2-1. No. 1 Cody Merrill won a tight one, 3-2, with No. 9 Nicholas Sahakian (St. John Bosco).

In an odd twist, all of Gilroy’s remaining placers earned bronze medals in No. 12 Moses Mendoza (120), No. 3 Isiah Cortez (126), and No. 17 Elijah Cortez (132).

Walnut’s No. 8 Ronnie Ramirez won his second consecutive state crown with a 4-1 win over No. 10 Nathan Carillo (St. John Bosco) at 120. Carillo stopped El Dorado’s No. 11 Isiah Quintero’s bid to three-peat in the semis, a week after beating Quintero in the Masters Finals.

No. 1 Brock Mantanona (Palm Desert) reached the top of the podium at 150 a year after finishing second at 138. Mantanona edged Poway’s Root, 5-4. Root took out No. 2 Miguel Estrada (Frontier), a two-time state champ, in the semis 3-1 in overtime.

Another runner-up from a year ago, No. 5 Collin Guffey (Granite Hills), made the next step up to the top with a 3-0 shutout of St. John Bosco’s No. 6 Joseph Antonio at 165.

Another tightly contested affair went the way of the underdog as No. 7 Grigor Cholakyan (St. John Bosco) won a 3-2 tiebreaker against No. 6 Andrew Barbosa (Palm Desert) at 157. Barbosa beat Cholakyan, 7-2, at the Doc Buchanan tournament in early January.

No. 10 Henry Aslikyan (Birmingham) won the 106lb crown with a 6-3 win over Poway’s Kikiniou. No. 12 Sonny Kling (Canyon Springs) won the 190lb gold with relative ease, 9-2, versus No. 23 Brokton Borelli (Los Banos).

Clovis’ No. 11 Nikade Zinkin blanked Clovis West’s unranked Jeff Lopez, 3-0, at 126. Lopez shocked No. 3 Isaiah Cortez in the semis, 5-1.

Edmond North cruises to Oklahoma 6A State Championship

Oklahoma has four divisions for its state series. Most of the national caliber talent resides in the 6A division, so that will be our focus here.

Edmond North (260.5 points) put ten in the finals and placed all 14 of its wrestlers, with eight winning gold medals. Second place Bixby (129.5) and third place Stillwater (110.5) crowned three champions each.

Edmond North’s Joseph Jeter (HM at 150) pulled off the only upset in the 6A finals with a 7-3 victory over No. 10 Ismael Guerrero (Bixby). No. 14 Jake Goodin beat Broken Arrow’s Rudy Rojas, 9-1, in the finals after Rojas pinned No. 15 Eric Casula (Westmoore), 3:11, in the semis.

Other titlists for North were Devon Miller (120, HM), No. 9 Kody Routledge (157), No. 17 Talon McCollom (190), No. 12 Oscar Williams (215), and No. 11 Ricky Thomas (285).

Routledge got by No. 11 Landyn Sommer (Stillwater), 4-3, in his title bout. Others who endured close finals matches were Miller 3-2 over Piedmont’s Cash Donnell, McCollom 3-0 over Union’s Wura Yinusa, and Thomas with a 1-0 win against Sand Springs Mason Harris.

Placing second for Edmond North were No. 16 Hunter Hollingsworth (138) and Jude Randall (175). Securing bronze were Madden Skidmore (113), Christian Belford (126), Hudson Hackbarth (132), and Brayden Lucas (165).

Bixby and Stillwater were also both three-for -five in the finals. Bixby’s champs were No. 5 Gage Walker (126), No. 5 Jace Roller (138), and No. 20 Clay Giddens-Buttram (175).

Roller beat Hollingsworth 3-1 and Giddens-Buttram needed overtime to get by Randall, 3-1. Isaiah Jones (132) joined Guerrero as a silver medalist.

Stillwater’s three titlists were No. 23 Aydan Thomas (113), No. 3 JJ McComas (132), and No. 2 LaDarion Lockett (165). None had close matches with all three posting major decisions.

Marlow won the 3A tournament, Tuttle took the 4A crown and Elgin was tops in 5A.
