USA Wrestling wasted little time in getting the wrestling spring postseason tournaments underway, a week after Ohio and Pennsylvania ended their seasons, the masses gathered at the UNI Dome on the Campus of the University of Northern Iowa for the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals.

Texas’ Olivarez defeats Manville and Braun at USA Folkstyle Nationals, named Outstanding Wrestler

Wrestling began on Friday and ended on Sunday with the 16U Boys. The Junior Boys had their finals on Saturday afternoon and Idaho dominated the championship count, bringing home five titles.

At 120, Mack Mauger (No. 8 at 126) got the winning ways started for Idaho with a 4-2 win over Wisconsin’s Co’ji Campbell. Honorable Mention Jaxton Packer followed at 126 and beat fellow Idahoan Tucker Bowen in overtime tiebreaker, 4-2.

No. 21 Carson Exferd was their next gold medalist with a 5-0 blanking of California’s No. 24 Aiden Simmons. At 175, Hudson Rogers won a battle of wrestlers on the periphery of the rankings over Illinois’ Matthew Jens, 2-1, for his second straight Junior Folkstyle title. Jens beat Rhode Island’s Honorable Mention Isael Perez, 1-0, on his way to the finals.

Honorable Mention Shilo Jones brought the heavyweight crown back to Idaho by downing Kansas’ Corbin Puga, 3-1. To reach the finals, Jones edged fellow HM wrestlers Micah Hach (South Dakota), 2-1.

No. 2 Pierson Manville has had a tough last few weeks on the mats. In the Pennsylvania regional finals and state finals, Manville fell to Central Mountain’s No. 1 Luke Simcox, surrendering his No. 1 ranking. At this affair, Manville met Texas’ Dorian Olivarez in the 144lb finals and fell again, 2-1.

Olivarez, who was a returning champ, also defeated No. 17 Alex Braun (Minnesota), 4-2, on the way to the finals. Olivarez was in the rankings but was removed when he did not participate during the high school season. His performance over the weekend led to him being named the Outstanding Wrestler in the Junior Division.

Kansas’ Taye Wilson is unranked but claimed the 157lb glory with a 10-5 win over No. 25 Beau Priest (California). That was it for the unexpected results.

No. 6 Caleb Noble (Illinois) pocketed the 106lb title with a 12-5 win over Braydon Pacheco (Kansas). Geronimo Rivera (No. 23 at 126) won the 132lb gold in the ultimate tiebreaker period, 7-6, versus Virginia’s Geoffrey Whelan, who was only third in the VA 6A states).

Virginia’s No. 19 Chase Van Hoven had an easy time with Arizona’s D3 state champion, Gabriel Gallardo, posting a 17-2 technical fall at 150. Utah’s Leimana Fager (HM) won the 190lb weight by pinning North Dakota’s Hugh Meyer in the third period, 4:58. Fager beat fellow HM grappler Micah Hach (South Dakota), 2-1, in the semis.

Washington’s Lars Michaelson (No. 25 at 190) was up at 215 where he edged two-time D2 Wisconsin state champion Ian Smith, 4-3.

Michigan’s Cory Thomas was in our rankings until his season ended before the postseason began. Thomas won a 5-2 decision over Indiana’s Evan Roudebush, who was fifth at the Indiana states.

Louisiana’s Alex Rozas has spent some time in the rankings, but currently sits outside of them. Rozas rolled to a 14-1 win over Kansas’ Ryder Dempewolf in the 113lb final. Oklahoma’s Cason Craft won the 100lb bracket with a second period fall of Utah’s Trexden Olsen, 2:46.

Sunday morning saw the 16U champions revealed Illinois, Iowa, and Utah crowned three champions. California and Missouri had two each. In regard to the national rankings, there were no surprises amongst the outcomes in this division.

Illinois’ three titlists were Brody Sendele (157), Aaron Stewart (165, No. 11 at 157), and Jonathan Rulo (285). Sendele, a repeat titlist, made quick work of Iowa’s Barrett Mieras in the finals with a first period decking, 1:41. Mieras did not place in Iowa’s 3A states. Sendele’s toughest match came in the quarters over third place finishing Victor Marks-Jenkins of Maryland, 8-3.

Stewart was up a weight from where he competed during the season and saw a similar result, another tournament title, this one by a 9-4 score over Indiana’s Xavier Smith. Stewart was a runner-up at this event a year ago. Rulo put his heavyweight crown in the book with an 8-4 decision of Hayden Smith, who was seventh at the Indiana state tournament.

Iowa’s Gavin Landers was ranked at 106 before moving up and is lacking a signature win at 113 to crack those rankings. His wait will take a little longer as he blanked unranked Pierce Hurd (South Dakota), 6-0, in the finals, and faced no ranked foes. His performance impressed enough so that he was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the 16U Division.

No. 17 Dawson Youngblut flattened Arizona’s Justin Beauvais in the third period, 5:20, of his 132lb title bout. At 138, Ethan Christoffer, who was third in Iowa’s 1A states, posted a 10-2 major decision of Wisconsin’s Tristan North, for his top honors.

Utah’s gold medalists were Tanner Telford (106), Mason Carlson (126, HM at 120), and Noah Bull (144). Telford was second in the 6A states and used a pin of Nebraska’s Cole Caniglia, 3:25, for his title winning maneuver.

Carlson threw a 17-7 major decision of Illinois’ Bruno Cassioppi on the final line of his bracket. Bull won an 8-4 decision against Iowa’s Maximus Dhabolt.

California’s two gold medalists were at non-high school weights, Tyler Sweet (94) and Jax Vang (100). One of Missouri’s champs came at the lightest weight, Wyatt Danneger (88), and the other at 190 with Deacon Moran posting an 11-8 win over Wisconsin’s Quinton Ortegon.

Texas’ Steel Meyers was a National Prep Tournament placer as a freshman and edged Idaho’s Damion Hamilton, 3-1, here for the 150lb title. At 120, Nevada’s Abraham Coronado took out Texas’ Izayiah Chavez, 6-2.

Indiana’s Michael White pinned Iowa’s state runner-up and returning champion Broedy Hendricks with two seconds left in the 175lb title match, 5:58. Kansas’ Noah Mathis won the 215lb gold with an 11-2 major decision over Iowa’s Kyler Sallis.
