Kentucky Derby: Past winners
Saturday will mark the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby.
American Pharoah remains the favorite even after landing in the 17th post position. No horse has ever won from the 17th gate, though recent winners I'll Have Another (2012) and Big Brown (2008) have won from even further outside, in the 19th and 20th gates, respectively.
Last year, favorite California Chrome captured the Derby with the post position No. 5, which has been a successful spot in recent Derbies. Funny Cide and War Emblem won from the fifth gate in 2003 and 2002, respectively, as did Silver Charm in 1997 and Strike The Gold in 1991. This year, the fifth gate will be occupied by Danzig Moon.
Dortmund, which has the second-best odds of winning the race, drew the No. 8 gate, and Carpe Diem, which has the third-best odds, will start in gate two.
