Fans and players enjoyed a pregame flyover before the start of the 83rd MLB All-Star game at Kauffman Stadium. The game returned to Kansas City, Missouri for the first time since 1973.

Former Royals third baseman George Brett threw out the first pitch of the All-Star Game. Brett was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.

American League manager Ron Washington (left) greeted National League manager Tony La Russa before the game. La Russa, who managed the Cardinals to a World Series title in 2011, retired after the season.

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval hit a three-run triple in the first inning off Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander. The National League scored five runs in the first inning which tied a Senior Circuit record for most runs in any inning of an All-Star Game.

Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista made a diving catch on a ball hit by the Brewers Ryan Braun in the second inning.

Giants pitcher Matt Cain, the National League starter in his first All-Star appearance, went two scoreless innings, allowed one hit and struck out one. Cain combined with 10 relievers to shut out the American League for the first time since 1996.

With two outs in the fourth inning, St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal hit a triple. It was the third triple of the night for the National League, the first time in All-Star Game history a team has tripled three times. Furcal later scored on a base hit by his Cardinals' teammate Matt Holliday.

The Giants Melky Cabrera (right) capped the fourth inning with a two-run homer off Rangers pitcher Matt Harrison. Matt Holliday scored ahead of Cabrera and the National League took an 8-0 lead.

Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones acknowledged the crowd before batting as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. Jones, in his eighth and final All-Star Game, singled in his only plate appearance. Chipper's final All-Star Game numbers -- .429 (6-for-14), HR, RBI and three runs scored.

Angels rookie Mike Trout led off the sixth inning for the American League with a single and then stole second base. Trout later walked in the 8th inning. One of a record five rookies in the game, he became the third youngest player to ever get a hit in an All-Star game.

With its 8-0 victory, the NL has its first three-game winning streak in two decades. It now leads the overall series 43-38-2 and will have homefield advantage for the World Series.

Melky Cabrera, who played for the Royals last season, was named the All-Star Game MVP. He went 2-for-3 with a homer, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Cabrera becomes the fifth Giants player to win the MVP award joining Willie Mays (1963, '68), Juan Marichal ('65), Willie McCovey ('69) and Bobby Bonds ('73).
