The New York Daily News reported on Monday that Major League Baseball, "armed with voluminous evidence they believe would warrant lifetime banishment," is close to handing down Alex Rodriguez's suspension for his alleged role in the Biogenesis scandal. Citing "a source familiar with the discussions between MLB officials and A-Rod’s representatives," the News suggests that Rodriguez will be offered a suspension that will last through the end of the 2014 season as the only alternative to having commissioner Bud Selig invoke the power of his office to circumvent due process and ban Rodriguez from baseball for life.

First-time offenders under the Joint Drug Agreement receive a 50-game suspension, and even though A-Rod failed a drug test back in 2003, he has technically yet to have a first offense because that failure came during survey testing. He did admit to using steroids during his three years with the Texas Rangers from 2001-2003 but that came before testing was in place. He is currently embroiled in the Biogenesis scandal that last week landed Ryan Braun a 65-game suspension. Back in April, MLB accused Rodriguez of buying and then destroying Biogenesis documents that, the assumption is, were evidence of his guilt. If Baseball has evidence of such tampering, it would likely be factored into the length of Rodriguez's suspension.
