After the Orioles beat the Giants 10-2 on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Park, Baltimore centerfielder Adam Jones sent the following tweet:

I want to thank whatever slapdick threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u jackass.

Jones hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth and was 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the game.

Thus far no video of the incident has surfaced and neither team's broadcast captured or mentioned it. If true, this would go far beyond the usual objections to fans throwing objects on the field -- it interrupts the action of the game and endangers the players -- because of the disturbing racial subtext of a fan lobbing a banana at an African-American player, one I'm happy to say did not occur to me upon hearing about the incident. I've since learned that such banana-throwing incidents are "a rampant problem" in European soccer. Contrary to that USA Today report, however, fans can purchase fresh fruit at AT&T park at the Farmer's Market in section 218, which is behind home plate.

Per a report in TheBaltimore Sun, the Giants' senior director of media relations, Jim Moorehead, said that security camera footage will be reviewed on Monday in an attempt to confirm Jones' claim, though it's hard to imagine why Jones, who didn't mention the incident in post-game interviews, would make such a thing up. If footage of the incident can be found and the fan can be identified, one hopes that the Giants will take action to prevent that individual from attending future games.
