Game 5 of the World Series was tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh when, with one out, Boston's Xander Bogaerts singled for the second time in the game. Stephen Drew then walked, reaching base for the first time since his first at-bat of the Series, and David Ross hit a ground-rule double just inside the leftfield foul line to score Bogaerts with the go-ahead run.

With the lead in hand, Red Sox manager John Farrell let Jon Lester, who had retired eight in a row and thrown just 69 pitches through six innings, hit for himself. Lester made the second out of the inning, but Jacoby Ellsbury followed with a single to center that scored Drew to make it 4-2.
