Mets shower Derek Jeter with gifts before his final Subway Series game

OK, so this is actually pretty cool. Before the Yankees’ 1-0 win over the Mets at Citi Field on Thursday night, the home team presented Derek Jeter with a No. 2 subway tile mosaic as a retirement gift moments before the shortstop’s final Subway Series game. The Mets also gave Jeter a painting, a cake, and donated $22,222.22 to Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation charity.

Jeter’s collection of parting gifts continues to grow as his somewhat awkward farewell tour chugs along. Last month, the Astros presented Jeter with a pair of pinstripe boots and some golf clubs. The Angels gave him a pinstriped paddle board. In Milwaukee, the Brewers handed him a bronze replica of his Louisville Slugger bat. In Queens on Thursday, Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon honored Jeter with a pregame ceremony in a Citi Field conference room, and the team later presented a video tribute to the shortstop on the centerfield scoreboard after the national anthem.

Jeter went 0-for-4 in the game before being pulled for a double switch in the bottom of the eighth with the Yankees leading by a run. The game was an unlikely pitcher’s duel between the Yankees' Chase Whitley and Jacob deGrom, two young hurlers making their major league debuts. Besides Alfonso Soriano's go-ahead double in the seventh, the highlight of the game was Yanks' reliever Dellin Betances striking out six hapless Mets in a row.
