The Kansas City Royals placed left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 9th, after he underwent an appendectomy, the team announced Thursday.
Vargas was experiencing pain on Wednesday morning and underwent the procedure later that day. Royals manager Ned Yost reportedly said that Vargas' surgery went well.
The Royals will call up right-handed pitcher Louis Coleman from Triple-A to take Vargas' roster spot.
Vargas is 8-4 with a 3.31 ERA in 19 starts. Coleman was sent to Triple-A earlier this year with a 6.41 ERA.
