The New York Mets released 40-year-old right-fielder Bobby Abreu Sunday night, according to MLBTradeRumors.com. The website cited an email from the website of Minor League Baseball that was not immediately available.

The Mets had designated Abreu for assignment on Aug. 4, meaning the team had 10 days to either place Abreu on waivers, trade or release him. Abreu is in the midst of his 18th major league season. He is the career leader among all active players in walks and doubles, and is fifth in runs scored.

The two-time All-Star was hitting .238 with one home run and 14 RBI over 67 games this season for the Mets. Abreu did not play in the 2013 season and was attempting something of a 'comeback' in 2014

Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis took Abreu's roster spot earlier this month when Abreu was designated.
