Byron Buxton, Baseball America's No. 1 prospect, was carted off the field in an ambulance during a Double-A game in New Britain, Ct. after a violent collision with outfield teammate Mike Kvasnicka. Buxton, who was pursuing a fly ball during the fifth inning of a game against Bowie when he collided with Kvasnicka in right-center field, suffered a concussion and was subsequently hospitalized.

Both Twins prospects were down for an extended period of time after the collision. Buxton was reportedly motionless on the field for 10 minutes before an ambulance took him off the field. According to the Hartford Courant’s Dom Amore, Kvasnicka was able to walk away on his own but also went to the hospital with Buxton. The game resumed after a 30-minute delay.

According to MLB.com, Twins general manager Terry Ryan was at the game and left with Buxton in the ambulance.

"He's alert," said Ryan. "He has a concussion, so we'll have to take the normal procedures and protocol for concussion symptoms. He'll certainly be watched.

"We're grateful for just the concussion," Ryan added. "That was very scary."

Buxton — the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 draft — had already missed significant time this season after spraining his left wrist in March. After logging 30 games in the Florida State League, he was promoted to Double-A New Britain earlier this week. Before his promotion, Buxton was hitting .240/.313/.405 with four home runs and six steals in 121 at-bats for High-A Fort Myers.
