Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish is headed to the disabled list with right elbow inflammation, MLB.com reporter T.R. Sullivan wrote Wednesday night.

Darvish, who turns 28 this weekend, will undergo an MRI on Thursday, the same day he was supposed to pitch in the series finale against the Rays. In his place, the team has called up lefty Robbie Ross Jr to take the mound.

Darvish missed his bullpen session on Tuesday, a day after saying he felt the inflammation while playing catch. He had started on Saturday in an 8-3 loss to the Astros in which he allowed six runs in four-plus innings. He is 10-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 22 starts this year.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Darvish would wanted to have pitched if the team was in a playoff hunt, but the Rangers are currently buried at the bottom of the AL West so it was decided to go the cautious route and give him rest:

"Yu expressed he could pitch if we were in a different spot. If we were in a more meaningful spot [in the standings], Yu would be good to go. But he agreed and we agreed to be cautious and smart about it."
