JAFFE: Wait 'Til Next Year: Surprisingly competitive Marlins at crossroads

The 24-year-old can become a free agent after the 2016 season, but the Marlins still plan to offer him a contract extension this offseason, ESPN.com reported on Thursday.

Stanton, who made his second NL All-Star team this season, hit .288 with 37 home runs (which still leads the NL by six over the Cubs' Anthony Rizzo) and a career-high 105 RBIs in 145 games. He is expected to be in the running for NL MVP.

In five seasons with the Marlins, Stanton has 154 homers and 399 RBIs with a .903 OPS, but Miami (76-83) will finish under .500 for the fifth straight year.
