Steinbrenner's foundation to fund education of NYPD officer's children
A foundation co-founded by late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner will pay for the education of the children of NYPD officer Rafael Ramos, who was killed along with his partner Wenjian Liu in Brooklyn on Saturday, according to the New York Daily News.
Silver Shield Foundation has been in operation for 32 years and funds the education of children of New York City police officers, firemen and Port Authority employees who die in the line of duty. The Yankees are community partners with the foundation.
From the Daily News:
Steinbrenner started his foundation in 1982 after seeing a news account of four children flanking their mother and folding an American flag at the funeral of their father, an NYPD officer who had been killed in the line of duty.
The education of Ramos' 13-year-old son Jaden and another son who is in college will be paid for by the Silver Shield Foundation.
Liu did not have any children.
