The Chicago White Sox have released outfielder Dayan Viciedo, the team announced Wednesday

Viciedo, who turns 26 next month, was designated for assignment last week. The White Sox could not find a trade partner, so he was released.

A native of Cuba, Viciedo was signed in 2008 as an amateur free agent and was a three-year starter for the White Sox. In 2014, he played in 145 games, primarily as a corner outfielder, and batted .231 with .686 OPS. He was second on the team with 21 home runs.

The signing of Melky Cabrera and the progress of hot prospect Avisail Garcia left the White Sox with a crowded outfield. Nonetheless, Viciedo was tendered a contract in the offseason and signed for $4.4 million to avoid arbitration. He will be owed one sixth of that money after being released.
