Marlins ace Jose Fernandez to make season debut July 2
Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez will make his first major-league start since undergoing Tommy John surgery on July 2, the team announced Monday.
Fernandez had the surgery in May 2014 after he was diagnosed with a torn UCL. He has made two minor-league rehab starts and is scheduled to make a third in Triple A on Wednesday.
The Marlins will play the San Francisco Giants on July 2. A matinee price discount will be in effect, hot dogs will cost $1 and there will be a "Jose Head" fan giveaway.
Fernandez, 22, was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2013. He had a 2.19 ERA with 187 strikeouts and 58 walks in 172 2/3 innings and also finished third in Cy Young voting. He was similarly impressive in 2014, striking out 70 and walking just 13 in 51 2/3 innings before his injury.
