Maicer Izturis expected to miss rest of season after shoulder surgery
Toronto Blue Jays infielder Maicer Izturis underwent surgery on his shoulder on Thursday and is expected to miss the rest of the season, the team announced.
Izturis had surgery to repair a tear in his shoulder sustained last month during a Double A rehab assignment. The 34-year-old hasn't appeared in an MLB game since April 13, 2014, missing the rest of last season due to a knee injury.
Entering spring training, Izturis was considered the favorite to be Toronto's starting second baseman, but he strained his groin and had to start the season on the disabled list.
In his last semi-healthy season in 2013, Izturis hit .236 with five home runs and 32 RBIs in 107 games.
Izturis has a $3 million option with the Blue Jays for 2016, or he can be bought out for $1 million.
