Mets beat Cardinals 3–1 in second-longest MLB game of 2015

The New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the second-longest game of the season on Sunday, prevailing 3–1 in 18 innings. Only the 19-inning game in April between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox was longer.

The New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the second-longest game of the season on Sunday, prevailing 3–1 in 18 innings. Only the 19-inning game in April between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox was longer. 

The Mets took a 1–0 lead in the top of the 13th inning on an RBI double by Kevin Plawecki, but closer Jeurys Familia gave up a leadoff homer to Kolten Wong in the bottom of the inning. 

The Mets were 1-for-26 with runners in scoring position in the game and finally managed to scratch across two runs in the 18th inning, thanks in part to an error by Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez that loaded the bases. Ruben Tejada then hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Wilmer Flores to score the go-ahead run. 

New York added an insurance run on a squeeze bunt by Eric Campbell.

The game eventually began to take its toll on fans and broadcasters alike.

The Mets and Cardinals also played a 20-inning game at Busch Stadium in April 2010 and the Mets lost a 20-inning game in 2013 against the Miami Marlins.
