Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips helped preserve a one-run lead in the seventh inning of Monday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs with an impressive defensive display.

Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler hit a sharp ground ball up the middle and Phillips slid to stop it. Without time to get to his feet and get the force-out at second, Phillips threw the ball behind his back without looking and Eugenio Suarez stepped on the bag just before the runner, ending the inning.

Had the ball gone through to centerfield, the speedy Dexter Fowler likely would have scored from second to tie the game.
