Watch: Tigers’ Justin Verlander loses no-hitter in ninth inning vs. Angels
Detroit Tigers righthander Justin Verlander lost a no-hitter in the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday at Comerica Park.
Verlander entered the ninth having struck out eight batters and walked two, but the Angels’ Chris Iannetta doubled off the paint on the leftfield line to lead off the frame. Verlander secured the Tigers’ 5–0 win after retiring the next three Angels hitters.
A no-hitter would have been the third of Verlander’s career; only five other pitchers have pitched more three or more no-hitters: Nolan Ryan (seven), Sandy Koufax (four), Bob Feller (three), Cy Young (three) and Larry Corcoran (three).

Verlander’s first no-hitter—also the first at Comerica Park—came on June 12, 2007, against the Milwaukee Brewers. His second came on May 7, 2011, against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
Five no-hitters were thrown earlier this season by the Houston Astros’ Mike Fierson Aug. 21, the Seattle Mariners’ Hisashi Iwakumaon Aug. 12, the Philadelphia Phillies’ Cole Hamels (now with the Texas Rangers) on July 25, the Washington Nationals’ Max Scherzeron June 20 and the San Francisco Giants’ Chris Hestonon June 9.
