Detroit Tigers righthander Justin Verlander lost a no-hitter in the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday at Comerica Park.

Verlander entered the ninth having struck out eight batters and walked two, but the Angels’ Chris Iannetta doubled off the paint on the leftfield line to lead off the frame. Verlander secured the Tigers’ 5–0 win after retiring the next three Angels hitters.

A no-hitter would have been the third of Verlander’s career; only five other pitchers have pitched more three or more no-hitters: Nolan Ryan (seven), Sandy Koufax (four), Bob Feller (three), Cy Young (three) and Larry Corcoran (three).
