Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez (shoulder) out for season
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.
Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder strain, general manager John Mozeliak announced Saturday.
Martinez left Friday night’s game after throwing only seven pitches. He was replaced by Tyler Lyons, who will now move from the bullpen into the rotation to replace Martinez.
Martinez had a 3.01 ERA and led the team with 184 strikeouts in 179 2/3 innings.
Mozeliak said that Martinez’s injury will not require surgery but will require enough rest that he will not be able to pitch again this year.
The Cardinals have already clinched a playoff berth and lead the Pirates by 2.5 games in the NL Central race.
