Report: Former catcher Scott Servais top option for Mariners manager

The Seattle Mariners are getting close to hiring a new manager and former MLB catcher Scott Servais looks like the top option for the job.

The Seattle Mariners are getting close to hiring a new manager and former MLB catcher Scott Servais looks like the top option for the job, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com. 

According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners and new general manager Jerry Dipoto have been quiet about their candidates, but sources have confirmed that they have interviewed Servais, who is currently the assistant general manager for the Angels. 

The team has also interviewed Rays third-base coach Charlie Montoyo, Red Sox special assistant Jason Varitek and minor-league manager Phil Nevin. 

Servais has worked with Dipoto in the past, holding his current position while Dipoto was the general manager of the Angels. Dipoto resigned from the position with the Angels in July after friction with manager Mike Scioscia over how the team should be run. 

Servais manages scouting and player development for Los Angeles. 

He played in 820 games with four teams during his 11-year Major League career.
