Nationals agree to hire veteran pitching coach Mike Maddux
The Washington Nationals have agreed to hire Mike Maddux as their next pitching coach, the team announced Wednesday.
Maddux, 54, played 15 MLB seasons as a reliever before becoming a well-respected pitching coach, first with the Brewers and later with the Rangers. Maddux joined the Rangers in 2009 and the team announced last week that he would not return.
“My time in Texas was great,” Maddux said at the time, according to MLB.com. “I'll miss it. I made a lot of good friends and helped develop a winning culture. I'll miss the people at the ballpark, from security guards to ushers, clubhouse kids, trainers, strength coaches. I've made a lot of good friends in that clubhouse throughout the years.”
Maddux joins the Nationals staff under new manager Dusty Baker, who was hired earlier this week. Washington has yet to hire any other assistants.
Steve McCatty was the Nationals’ previous pitching coach and was fired along with the rest of Matt Williams’s staff last month.
