Cincinnati Reds hire Lou Piniella as senior advisor to baseball operations

The Cincinnati Reds announced the hiring of Lou Piniella in a consulting capacity.

The Cincinnati Reds have hired former manager Lou Piniella in a consulting capacity as senior advisor to baseball operations, the team announced Friday.

Piniella managed the Reds from 1990–92, winning a World Series in his first season at the helm with a sweep over the Oakland Athletics. Piniella last managed with the Chicago Cubs from 2007–10.

Piniella has managed five teams in his illustrious career, also spending time with the Yankees, Mariners and Devil Rays. He has a career managerial record of 1,835–1,713, good for a .517 winning percentage.

The former MLB leftfielder also worked as a consultant for the San Francisco Giants during the 2011 season, leaving the team after one year for a broadcasting position with the Yankees.

Piniella is expected to spend time with the Reds during spring training. Cincinnati’s first full squad workout is scheduled for Feb. 23.
