Texas Rangers rightfielder Shin-Soo Choo is out four to six weeks after suffering a calf injury and the team has recalled top prospect Nomar Mazara, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Mazara, 20, is currently rated as the No. 3 overall prospect in the Rangers minor league system by MLB.com. He had the strongest spring training of the team’s outfield prospects, hitting .375 with an .894 OPS. In 12 plate appearances in Triple-A this season, Mazara has six hits with a home run and 4 RBIs.
Mazara was signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic by the Rangers in July 2011.
The Rangers have also called up catcher Brett Nicholas to replace Robinson Chirinos on the roster. Chirinos was placed on the disabled list after suffering a fractured forearm on Saturday.
